SkimLinks is an advertising system that is used to help support the site. The system was implemented over a year or so ago.
They are set not to appear very often. Although I have noticed them being more common some nights the others. The past few weeks have been the exception as I've seen them quite often.
I'll put a bug in a few people's ear to see what's up with them lately. Honestly I'm not exactly sure why they appear more often some days then others.
Yeah, they have been on here a while. I am not sure at all why they would appear to be more prominent on any particular day...if anything they should be based on the content of a thread/post I guess. If you guys see some instances of it being "too much" and an annoyance, take a screengrab and post it here.
Yeah...I get the benefit but they can be annoying if you use cursor to read posts. Another option Ive seen...not with words...but help monetize site...is to plug a brief ad in between posts in threads here and there. Yeah...show an example...maybe Ryan can reset frequency etc so they arent redundant in any post. Be grateful they dont have sound feature...lol.
Funny I never really noticed them before. At least with a mouse-over they don't pop up a window that covers a bunch of text and must be closed, so they are a lot less obtrusive than traditional mouse-over ads.
So in that sense I like them better than the traditional mouse-over ads.
How do they work as far as generating revenue for the site? Does PcPer get revenue when I click the link? Or does the site only get money when I actually buy something via that link? And if it's only when I buy something, does it have to be something that was originally presented when I click the link or does it keep trackof the entire session and any purchasing I do reward PcPer? Sorry for all the questions, just curious really. But if it does track the session then I might purposely head to Amazon via that link so the site gets some cash when I buy something.
Just seems a funny way to generate revenue to me, seems like it's targeting impulse buywers rather than someone who is seriously shopping for something... but if we can use it as a way to generate revenue for PcPer when we are buying something I'd lik to know!
edit: Howdy Jim!
