case has 3.5" drive bays only: any problems with 3.5" DVD burners?

I've been looking for a case that fits onto a very shallow footprint, between 8" and 11" deep (thread here).

I've found one at HiveLogix that is 12" wide, 2.75" tall, and 8" deep, with two (2) external drive bays; however both drives are only 3.5".

Attaching an external 5-1/4" DVD burner is a possibility, but I'm wondering about internal 3.5" DVD burners. Are all backup software packages and ISO image burning software packages 100% compatible with the drive regardless of the form-factor? Is the form-factor totally transparent? Or do these smaller drives throw some "curve balls"?

I have never heard of a 3.5" internal DVD drive. A DVD is 4" in diameter, so I dont even see how it would be possible to make one.
