ok i know there called pci slots . bit what are they for ?

With so many things that used to be on cards now on the motherboard or USB, I can see why the OP asks. Grasshopper: before you were born, you would need slots for (at least) an NIC, a sound card (oh the joys of setting up DOS to use a Soundblaster), a modem (don't worry if you don't know what those are) and maybe a RAID card or even separate cards for 2D and 3D graphics. These went on PCI or ISA slots. Or MCA if you were a bit odd...
