get the mx518 if you can still find them. logitech replaced it with the cheaper g400. i prefer the mx518 over the g5 simply because of the hardware controlled DPI selector. the g5 needs windows drivers to do this. the mx518 does not need any driver to change DPI. although if you want to customize the buttons on the mx518 you will need the logitech driver/software.
i have both the mx518 (1st and 3rd generation) and the g400. the difference is in build quality and materials used. the g400 is considerably lighter than the mx518. it feels weird. the USB cable on the mx518 has more insulation but strangely enough is more flexible than the g400 cable. the DPI for the 3rd generation mx518 matches that of the g400. my 1st generation mx518 is still going strong. i used to play a lot of FPS on it so that says a lot about its durability and quality.
hope this helps.
If you can swing it for a logitech G700 (paid ~80$ CAD for mine) you wont regret it ! Wireless/wired mouse, 1ms response time even in wireless. Only thing is the single AA battery life is low (~2 days with my usage, or more if you lower the poll rate).
I have been a long time fan of the MX518 I finally found a replacement the Razer Imperator.
My brother-in-law swears by his new RAT 7 gaming mouse. It's the ugliest thing I ever saw but according to him it's adjustable to all get out and has made an improvement in his BF3 gaming that's "night and day." Of course he's said this about pretty much every mouse he's ever owned so take this recommendation with a grain of salt. The Rat 7 does have glowing reviews from all the usual sources, but I've learned to take these "professional" reviews with many grains of salt. Case in point are the reviews on Newegg. They are certainly not the crazy high 98% that PCGamer gave it.

These are all awesome suggestions...I had the 518 till it gave up the ghost. What im trying to find is something that performs good and is under $50.
I've been looking at a few offerings from Gigabyte and Thermaltake ..all within the $29-$39 price ranges and wondering if anyone has had any experiences with them.
One of my biggest problems with 518, g5, g6 was the scroll wheel.. i keep wearing them down.
I also have a Coolermaster CM Storm Sentinel ZERO-G 5600DPI which is ok for the 42$ I paid. The right click can make a squeaky sound from time to time, at least on mine it does and when you change dpi you loose tracking for about 1 sec. Other then that I like it, maybe that'd be a good one for you.
I highly recommend the logitech mx518 and g500. Also if you are having problems with your current logitech if you contact them through there website you can RMA it and get a new one![]()
