    590/6990 or something new coming?

I recently built a new computer, but carried over my XFX 5850 thinking I wouldn't do that much gaming.

    I was wrong!

So, I've been looking at replacing it with either a 590/6990; however, I didn't want to buy such a serious card if the 6xx/7xxx will be around in early 2012.

Is the next big thing close, or are we living in a 590/6990 world for the next 6 months?

I thought the 7000 series were suppose to be out by the end of the year, though I also heard that the high end versions wont be the first ones out. The 600 series arn't suppose to come out till Q1 though.

If you want more performance later you can always grab a second card for quad SLI / CF.

What's your display setup right now? (Monitor(s) & resolution)

    Spoiler!

Re: 590/6990 or something new coming?

    Currently, I'm on the following:

    i7-2600K @ 3.4
    16GB Corsair Vengenace
    XFX 5850
    3x 23" monitors

I typically only play a game at 1920x1080 as most (all?) games I've played haven't shown any real support for 5760x1080 across three monitors. That's not really a concern, though. I have the three monitors for my desktop environment.

Recently, I purchased BF3, and it runs fairly well on my machine, but I can tell that it's not maintaining a minimum solid 60fps with all the settings on minus AA.

And so, I'm looking for a new video card. A friend of mine has a 580 with a similiar build, and his BF3 runs great. From what you guys are saying, it would seem that some newer cards may be coming out soon?

This is the typical time for a new line.

I would wait.. and when I did finally buy, it wouldn't be a 590 or 6990. I'd definitely be more interested in a SLI or CFX setup of 2 580's or 2 6970's

But, typically, won't a single next gen of cards be better than SLI/CFX of the previous gen?

No, definitely not. It depends on the game, but SLI/CFX scaling can approach 80-90+% (less than 2x because of overhead). When was the last time a single generation jumped 80-90% in performance? Granted, there might be technological reasons to switch, like additional features that you want/need. I actually worded my previous post poorly. I meant that I'd wait for next gen if I were you, but if you can't wait and want a card right now, I would skip the 6990/590's, which are very hard to find and perform worse than a pair of 6970/580's. The dual-gpu cards are bumping right up to the max power draw possible in a single card, so they use downclocked versions of the GPU's to stay in spec. having 2 single GPU cards gives you the full performance

    I still run a pair of 295s.

I constantly check the new card reviews and can't find anything that is that much better than what I already own.

As long as I continue to get good frame rates I am happy with what I have.

Waiting sounds like a plan. I've never had the latest and greatest, so maybe I can do that with the next fancy video card.
