    anti virus (preferably including firewall)

    hi,
i'm running windows vista 64 on a x58 chipset i7... been running mcafee total security since day one... my license just expired...
i'm passing this rig on to my cousin very soon, so i don't want to purchase an anti-virus...
i'm googling and coming upon very mixed reviews for every free anti-virus available...
what do you suppose is my best bet? i'd love if it could include a firewall, so i can just go ahead and disable windows defender... it's quite a nuisance since i have uac disabled...
most reviews point towards microsoft security essentials, but i'm running it on an old xp lappie, and it runs so silent, i question it's reliability!

thanks for any input you'll might offer!

Personally I use the ESET security system. All such products have weaknesses, but ESET's detection system is good, and it's very unobtrusive.

If you are looking for free Windows Security Essentials does a pretty good job but as mentioned above I prefer ESET NOD32
    Asus M8Z77-V Deluxe
    Intel 3770K
    G-Skill 1600 16G
    Corsair H100
    EVGA 670 GTX
    2 Corsair Force 3 120G (Raid 0)
    2 x Seagate 1T 6G
    2 Samsung SyncMaster T260HD Monitors
    Thermaltake Level 10 UGK
    Silverstone Olympia OP1000 1000W
    Windows 8

Never argue with idiots, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Thumbs up Re: anti virus (preferably including firewall)

I think Microsoft Security Essentials does a very good job as far as free antivirus software goes.

Many times have I seen the fake antivirus that goes by many names. It finds a way around Webroot, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Norton and McAfee. Now if you can boot into safe mode and run an up-to-date rkill.exe, then update malwarebytes online and scan...that seems to get rid of it 99% of the time. This isn't real-time protection, but its good for the most common infections.
