    X-Fi Fatal1ty or Realtek ALC892

    Hello All

I am about to build my 1st new PC since 2007.
I have the Asus P8Z86 V Pro mobo and was wondering if the on board sound isbetter then my old X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS (with drive bay)?
I will be running Win 7 pro.
    Silencio case.
    I7 2600

It will be used for gaming, music and videos.

I understand that on board audio has come along way since my last build.
I wouldn't want to loose any framerates in gaming though.

    Any advice appreciated.

onboard isn't even close. use your X-Fi. i had to buy an X-Fi after checking the quality of 889. 892 cannot be any better.

    Yes it is.
That card is quite long in tooth.
You might be hard put to find drivers that won't have you pulling your hair out.
    Realtek ALC892 is 24/192

If it was me. And I was building my 1st rig in 4 years.
I'd run the onboard and look at some of the recent offerings from Asus and HT|Omega.

Try the pax drivers for the x-fi. Haven't had an issue with those.

    Not sure what to do.
I may build without the card to start with and then try adding it if I'm unhappy with the ALC892

The only issues I've ever had with onboard sound with they never seemed to be loud enough. I always had to add another 20dB in foobar. Otherwise, it is just barely loud enough through my headphones. The xfi, I never had any issues with.

    It's the Oz Man!!!

Actually, I would leave the onboard off and try the X-Fi and see how it goes with the recommended drivers. If it gives you problems, then fall back on the onboard.
