    question on ATI folding

I just replaced my 8800GT card with a Radeon 6850 and the intent to buy a second when they get under a hundred bucks and run them in crossfire. I have been using the 8800 for folding for a while and get 5k ppd on it which is half my total. I really wanted to stay with Nvidia but I game regularly and just couldn't ignore the performance of the AMD cards these days especially when you throw in crossfire.

Anyway, I know the AMD cards don't yield anywhere near the ppd of nvidia, but I would still like to fold with it. I am running FAH GPU tracker V2 and have GPU 0 manually set to fold a R800 series card. It is folding but ppd looks pretty lousy.

Is this best way to go for me, or should I try folding using the client from Stanford or just forget gpu altogether?

    thanks

what PPD are you getting? I believe there was some attempt to improve the ATI client with the v7 release, but I'm not sure the gains were anything to write home about

If I remember correctly, you still have to dedicate a core (of your processor) for each card; at least for ATI cards.

    Re: question on ATI folding

    @ activate...roughly 2500ppd....I had been getting around 5k with the 8800

@mmettin...I believe you are right, because when I tried gpu folding it dropped my SMP to about 2500. I double checked my power settings since i am also on a brand new install of windows 7 64 bit and my hard drive was set to turn off so I am going to try it again.

Just wasn't sure if I would be better off not using fah gpu tracker or not....I don't really understand how that works.

I don't want to say for sure that that sounds right, but it sounds like it could be. I'll keep digging to see what others are getting

Thanks. I am going to try with and without GPU folding and see how I do.

    Re: question on ATI folding

I did a little perfunctory digging and your numbers do seem low. What is the project number you're seeing in GPU tracker? That ppd number could be feasible on the Core 11 WU's, but any of the WU's using the newer core 16 should be higher than that. You can check what core is in use by looking up the project number or, more directly, opening taskmanager and checking the folding process itself

    Re: question on ATI folding

I am traveling this week so I will check when I get back this week. It definitely drops my ppd to 2500 on the SMP.

    thanks for your help!
