remember how they used to be known as a little upstart called black isle?

they in no way shape or form have topped the baldur's gate series. they haven't even come close. baldur's gate is the series that literally brought me into pc gaming.

and if you want a title after they changed their name i still think kotor is better.

the mass effect games are fun, i consider them A titles. but they are in no way shape or form anywhere near gamings greatest IMO.

they took story elements (rpg elements if you will) and tossed them into what is primarily a third person shooter. it made a good combination, but in no way shape or form would i consider this revolutionary. and its not something that hasn't been done before either. unless you want to make a big deal that it was third person instead of first.

i think deus ex was better. ( it was a first person game as we all know).

id easily put deus ex (original) and human revolution above the mass effect series. im ignoring the abomination that came out in the middle.

    just my 2 cents.
Yea I hear you.. ME isn't necessarily "revolutionary", especially in terms of gameplay or combat. The biggest "new" thing about ME is IIRC it is the first open-ended RPG with all spoken dialog. Kotor was pretty awesome, but it was like a text-based game when it came to making choices and having conversations. All-spoken dialog definitely immerses you a bit more. Team that up with a great story (IMO) and you have a very engaging game. I still think I prefer Kotor in total, but ME as a whole is very very good. never played baulder's gate so I cant comment on this notion that Bioware has been on a pretty steep decline since then

Haha. "Mass Effect concludes, not so much with a bang or a wimper, more the sound you get from releasing a balloon and watching it fart around the lounge."

I like the way he compares the ending of ME3 to what it would be like if LotR ended the same way:

Ok guys, I need your honest opinions here. Origin gave me a 50% off code to use at their store because of all the problems I had with a bad key for Arkham City. I was thinking of picking this game up as I could get it for $30 because of the discount. Is it worth the $30 or does the ending ruin the game like so many reviews I've read say it does?

The ending isn't that bad and even if you have a major beef with it, the game is fine up until the last 15 minutes, anyway. If you've played ME 1 and 2 and you're invested in the characters and plot, you owe it to yourself to play 3 anyway. I would be like seeing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back but not Return of the Jedi.

agreed. What would be your other options in the Origin store?

Well, I never played the first two ME's, but I'm assuming that's not a deal breaker and I should hopefully be able to get the gist of the story. As for my other Origin store options? Not much! Origin is definitely not Steam!

Not impossible to understand the story, but you'd be losing a lot. Its probably still worth a play, and who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to return and play the first two.

Yep. If you haven't played the first two games, you might as well flip the language to Greek, because you wouldn't understand what was going on anyway. If you have no plans to play the first two games, then maybe try something else. Syndicate is supposed to be good though I haven't played it yet.

    Update to the ending announced...

BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts Inc. announced Mass Effect™ 3: Extended Cut, a downloadable content pack that will expand upon the events at the end of the critically acclaimed Action RPG. Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes. Coming this summer, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be available for download on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC for no extra charge*.

    WOW!

I'm surprised A) They're changing it. B) They're doing it for free. I assumed that the cost of redoing the CGI cutscenes and getting the voice actors back would mandate that they would have to charge money for it.

Unless they're basically doing an Animal House style ending with no new cutscenes or VO.

"Liara went on to become Queen of Asari planet"

If they're just adding fat paragraphs for each character at the end of the game without any additional art assets or VO, then they probably could do it super cheap.

Hmm. now i'm just nervous.. they've done a bit of a do-over, but will it be what the people want? Their wording strongly implies that there won't be any major changes to the meat of the ending.. just more "clarity". Not sure if want

    Re: Mass Effect 3

from the bioware blog (can't provide link since its on my phone and work blocks the source)

Are there going to be more/different endings or ending DLC's in the future?
-No. BioWare strongly believes in the team's artistic vision for the end of this arc of the Mass Effect franchise. The extended cut DLC will expand on the existing endings, but no further ending DLC is planned
so no, they aren't changing the endings. just adding a few cinematic tweaks.. probably to remove the most egregious "WTF?!" moments of the ending cinematics. The ending will still suck on a more fundamental level
