6 core Phenom II 960T overclock question

I have recently upgraded my aged computer of 7 years to something a little more substantial. Tech has changed since then and looking for a little advice/guidance. I now have an unlocked 6 core 960T (thanks to the egg) and looking to gain as much as i can from it. My specs:

4gb x 2 G.Skill f3-12800CL9D (800mhz)
Corsair 850w txv2 psu
evga gtx 560 2gb oc
Gigabyte 990FXA-ud5 Motherboard
Phenom II 960T (3.03 ghz at stock)
~ cooled by an Antec Kuhler 620 (avg temp 29-32deg c)

days of searching for the cpu with the perfect stepping and squeezing every last mhz out of it, are probably over for me.

i did play the lotto with the 960t a couple of months ago. it did unlock and with a little vcore bump, passed 10 hours of prime95 at 3.8g.

i was more than happy.

Back in the day on my DFI board, i had a few overclocking settings that i could use via board bios. With the newest of boards it seems that the options are mind bending in comparison. What i am trying to do with my current system is to tweak the vcore and memory voltage to gain a bit from both and up my processing speed. It seems that i should be able to just that with what i have, i just lack the knowledge and understanding. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

the only reason to raise the vdimm is if it's not defaulting to 1.5v. i imagine memory speed is running at 1333mhz. that you raise to 1600mhz manually in the bios.

that's somewhere to start.

Just an update..

Currently have my processor at 3906.10, multiplier at x18, bus speed at 217 and the HT link at 2170. Going to see if i lower the multiplier and up the bus, lower the HT and see if i can get it over 4.0 ghz. think one of the issues will be heat, so will see about adding either a different fan or an additional fan to the underpowered cooling system..

use the multiplier to raise the clock speed. back in the day, the ht was used because the multi was locked.

I just unlocked the other 2 cores on my Phenom II x4 960T to x6 1605T
had it running 3.450 just raised Multiplier to 15 not sure if i need to make other adjustments. seemed to run stable. any ideas ?

i would think your good to go. you could prime95 a bit to be sure, if you wish.

when enabling the the extra cores you lose the core temp sensors.

i can try that, i set everything back to default. going to do some testing back to what i had in last post. yes i did notice core temps read zero, but using just the 4 cores they were ranging 18-20c so i should be ok . as for prime 95 i'll have to get the newest one i have an older version and it's been years since running it.

i try and write down all my settings and temps before doing stuff.

i got a reading with the 4 cores under load which was about 13c difference between the cpu and core temps . then extrapolate a core temp "number " with the cpu temp when running 6 cores.

with my gigabyte 790x, cooler master 212 and the cpu running 3.6@1.40v, i have seen as high as 72c. i have had it under load for about 3 weeks while folding without error.

NB x10 2300 1.15v
CPUID - reads Thuban x6 1605T
ram prime 95 torture test for about 30 min ran all 6 cores
cpu hit 57c and leveled out around 55c
cpu fan was around 2766 CM TX3 push mode

sysfan reading is 0- 1905 fluctuates 0-?

other fan readings are ok

don't remember how to post pics ?
haven't tried games yet
but run Sapphire Trixx @custom default haven't oc'd that yet

Right there with you buddy. All my systems now days crunch so I keep them stock, I like longevity. I have 1 of the system unlocked to a x4 (555be) with no oc.

hardware is so much more productive now and we no longer need to listen to the 80mm fans running at 5000 rpm.

All seems good so far left Video card alone
played Crisis warhead all settings maxxed
and nfs the run played for a few hours

just going through games to make sure they all work


not sure if sapphire trixx was my issue 80% load screen in warhead and rebooted
but i think my vddc was at .949 not 1.087 <-- probably need to put in video card section ?
