Core voltage is important, but it isn't everything to be considered for OC potential. A 3.5 Ghz IB has hit 7 Ghz! A 100% overclock.

The reduction in voltage and voltage tolerance has always been the case when transitioning between process nodes. It also means that smaller vcore jumps have a larger impact and consequently the vcore increases that used to be safe can now be dangerously high. Obviously we can't know until the information becomes more widely available, but I have every confidence that IB overclocking will at least match SB.

The i5-2500k was on the 'special' over up in the north of the border at $189 so i decided not to wait for IB. I hope to get a 4ghz oc but all i use is adobe flash/surfing and photoshop 1/month!

What motherboard are you using?
I bought my Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500K and Asus P8P67 Pro about the day the hardware first went on sale. So I eventually RMAed my motherboard for a 3.0 version and Asus gave me a free set of ear buds too (great pair). I bought my combo deal at Microcenter though. The Core i5 2500K was ~$179.99 USD and the Asus P8P67 Pro was ~$159.99. At Microcenter, ~$179.99 for the Core i5 2500K was the every day prices since release and the Asus P8P67 Pro was typically ~$189.99. My total out the door was about ~$340 not including tax.
Microcenter just dropped the price of the Sandy Bridge-E Core i7 3930k from ~$599.99 to ~$499.99. So now its $500 down from $600. The choice between SBE and IB just got a little harder for me. I’m still thinking of getting an IB Core i7 3770K / Z77 motherboard with a video card (GTX560 Ti or HD 7850) but a ~$100 drop on the 6 core IBE Core i7 3930K does turn my head a little.

Hi, OP here.I should have said that I will not be overclocking so if this adds to my original inquiry so much the better. I have never done it before and honestly as much as I like building systems, etc., I don't see myself as an enthusiast when it comes to overclocking. I hope I am not committing blasphemy.

I did build my FX4170 system, not OC'd, but it is "Sweet Hot Petunias" fast...I like it.
There are advantages to being retarded...and I'm taking advantage of all of them.
I’ve been asking myself the same question Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge (with a side of Sandy Bridge-E).
I was about set on a Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770K and Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. However, Microcenter just dropped the price of the Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K to ~$200 USD and I think that might be too good to pass-up on. The best price I would expect for the Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770K would be about ~$279.99 from Microcenter with a bit of luck (same price the 2600K hit Microcenter at on release).
Looking at the preview at Anandtech, the Sandy Bridge-E Core i7 3930K (~$500), Sandy Bridge-E Core i7 3820 (~$279), Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770 (~$??? - to - ~$320), Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K (~$200) were all fairly closely grouped together in the benchmarks.
So I think I’ll probably just go with a Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K and Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. I may also add a 240GB SSD from Corsair or Mushkin and a GTX560 Ti or HD 7850,….

@Octavean - Any other motherboards you had an eye on that you thought would be good choices as well? Thanks.
Mine runs at 4.3G with a simple overclock all day long with no problems.I hope to get a 4ghz oc but all i use is adobe flash/surfing and photoshop 1/month!

Never argue with idiots, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I was looking at the Asus Sabertooth Z77 as well,.....its about ~$239 USD at Newegg, whereas the Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe is about ~$289.
***edit***
Damn, the Microcenter price for the Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K went from ~$199.99 back up to ~$279.99 USD. I was out of town for a week or I would have jumped on it. I just didn’t want to make a purchase on an unknown / possibly insecure network. I got home late yesterday and the price shot back up today,….
Oh well, at these current prices I might as well wait to see what happens when Ivy Bridge is released. I think I heard availability will be on the 23 rd.
With any luck the Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770 will hit Microcenter at ~$279 to ~$300, which, would displace the Sandy Bridge Core i7 2600K (~$279) and the Sandy Bridge Core i7 2700K (~$300).

From that same article: "The highest clock-speed ever achieved by a PC microprocessor is 8585MHz. Andre Yang has managed to overclock an AMD FX microprocessor using Asus Crosshair V Formula mainboard and liquid nitrogen cooling system."
That's 139%. I bet that CPU could run FSX with all the bells and whistles maxed out.
