No wireless connect with U 11.10

Ok, I was able to download and install Ubuntu 11.10 on an old Dell
Latitude D600. I can't get the wireless to work. I use a simple 10
alpha/numeric WEP key from an Actiontec modem-wireless router
and it works fine with a Dell 1350 WLAN driver installed on Windows
XP. Do I somehow have to download the driver on Ubuntu ? The
wireless security is asking either for a 40 or 120 number over on
Umbutu. I'd like to use this OS, but if I can't get online, the program
is pretty worthless.

Any help is appreciated.

Update

I've tried and tried, etc. Wired hooks right up and am on line.
Wireless no go, so I'm uninstalling and going back to windows
until I can figure it out.

You probably have drivers installed, since it appears Ubuntu can detect your wireless card. Try using wicd instead of network-manager to connect instead.

To remove network-manager:

sudo apt-get remove --purge network-manager

To install wicd:

sudo apt-get install wicd

Thanks. No it doesn't recognize the wireless card. I'll try your tip
as well as a couple that pertain to this Dell D600. It does get online
with it wired from the router to the unit, but no luck with wireless.

I have the driver's download ZIP extracted, but I don't know how
to load the 1350 Dell - Broadcom drivers into system. I'll get there
one of these days. I just have to read about Ubuntu and read spme
help forum posts regarding wireless networking.

I could try to help you if you could tell me what wireless card is in your laptop? Type "lspci -nn" and paste the output here.
