Re: Windows 8 will not have native DVD playback

    huh?

gigabit switches are CHEAP, you can pick one up that supports jumbo frames for under 50 bux, and yea if you are recording live TV and moving it to storage it sucks up lots of time and I have lots of home users that are doing this.

Its not just for GB files either, those pesky 700 MB files fly. just last night i moved 400 pictures around my network to show a friends wife on the big screen, that was 1.86 GB, poof.... fast.

USB 3.0? what so we can go back to sneeker netting with USB flash drives.. awesome... ugh.... no thanks, there is a reason networking was created.

Go enjoy your high tech floppy disks............ blah!

i think you missed my point. i was replying to your wireless vs ethernet comment.

never said gigabit was expensive. i just said its not necessary for the average home user.

yes its nice to have sometimes, but there are faster ways to move files and if your walking around with a mobile device your probably just going to use wireless. yes if you have a gigabit ethernet port you could walk over and plug into a gigabit switch. but usb 3.0 is just as easy and faster.

thats my point. thats why your seeing mobile devices with out ethernet ports, because well...........its pointless for the average user. its something that will rarely, maybe never be used.

Couldn't agree more. Its actually very disappointing to see them basically leave WMC untouched. Its begging for an "app" integration system for customization purposes.. which would fit in perfectly with the metroWin 8 app store. As it is right now, WMC is an excellent HTPC OS, but most customization feels half-baked because theres no way to implement mods well. It also happens to be the only thing out there for CableCARD use, which probably also needs a Dolby license since most HDTV uses it for audio.

I think his point was that microsoft has clearly put their touch interface above their desktop one, to the detriment of (probably) billions of people around the world who use the windows GUI on a regular basis

i love it and swear buy it at work because from an IT standpoint its great. all my switches are gigabit.

but at home its meaningless unless your routinely coping 5-10 gigabyte files across your network all the time.

i haven't really found a use for gigabit at home other than very large file transfers between devices. but once everything moves to usb 3.0 gigabits going to be fairly useless to a home user.

home users just don't need that much throughput. its great for company networks though.
eh, I dunno about that. People with multiple users streaming content over the network can saturate a 100mbit connection, especially if theres HD involved. While I agree that for the most part average people are trending towards wireless connections for pretty much everything at home, GbE is not useless, even for casual users. Thats especially true for families or living arrangements with multiple concurrent users. USB 3 is/will be great for external storage, but its purpose is different.

well i was more or less thinking of wireless n which is theoretically 3 times faster than 100 meg with a strong signal.

also multiple people streaming doesn't mean anything an less they are sharing a connection through a single cable.

most switches have independent bandwidth on each port. in otherwords taking a 5 port switch as an example you can have full 100mbit transfers on ports 1 and 2 and a seperate 100 mbit transfer on ports 3 and 4.

now if you had pc 1 and 2 on one switch that was connected via 10/100 to another switch where pc 3 and 4 were connected and lets say you were transfering a file from pc 1 to 3 and pc 2 to 4 then you would saturate the 100mbit pipeline between switches. each of the transfers would be limited to 50 mbits each.

like i said gigabits not really necessary for the standard small home network. its very hard to saturate it unless your bottle necking it by connecting two 100mbit switches together via a 100mbit connection. its when multiple switches and/or routers come into play that gigabit becomes necessary. thats beyond the scope of the average home though.

now a large home network involving multiple switches or a company network are entirely different matters.

I got to say the video quality of DVD on PC doesn't look so great, looks better on a player hooked up to a TV and upscaled or BR on PC.
