What kind of plug is this?

I got this fan from a local JK Electronics, but I don't recognize the plug type. Would it be possible to modify this to take a Molex?



Furthermore, these were in clearance for 2$ each. Should I stock up with more? I don't really have an immediate use for them or anything.

looks to me like a standard 4pin PWM CPU fan connector. the 4th wire (blue) is for speed control from bios. I believe these can be used on a standard 3 pin mobo header as well, the 4th pin would just be hanging off the end of the header. If you want to swap them to molex it would just be a matter of cutting and splicing, though you could probably find pre-made adapters.

Also agree with the 4-pin PWM fan header. It can directly plug into any 3-pin fan header on the motherboard. There will be the two tabs to line them up properly anyway and the extra pin will just be off to the side.

You can probably find an adapter to molex for that without a problem. Typically any good quality fans from a reputable manufacturer will include those in the box as well.

As the man says. Most motherboards these days (and for some years now) have at least one four-pin header for the CPU fan. As stated, the four pin wire is a tacho wire. The board will also usually vary the voltage (and thus speed) in response to a temperature sensor somewhere. It's also how the BIOS reads the CPU fan speed for safety - something again that you see on modern motherboards. As stated, you can plug it into a three-pin header without a problem, which leaves the blue wire hanging off the end. If you look at the "key" on the casing, it is offset to one end.

You sometimes see a "lite" version of these on PSUs and water pumps: they have the same four-pin plug, but only a blue and black wire. These are just tacho connections so that (again) the motherboard can sense the speed of the fan/pump.

Thanks. But I would imagine a fan of that size could overload and kill a mobo plug. I remember doing it long time ago with another high speed fan.

I doubt it, it looks like its rated for 0.8A, which I think is pretty standard for fans. In general it looks like a fairly normal 120mm fan.
