So which do I go with? 670 vs. 680 vs. 7970

I just built a new rig with the Intel 37770K, my old rig was an Intel Q6600 and an Nvidia 8800GTS, so it was a needed upgrade. But there's a hole where a graphics card should be. I'd intended that whole to be filled by the MSI's Frozr version of the GTX680, but it keeps fluctuating between existing and not on Newegg (not even in stock and not, but even being listed as being out-of-stock or simply not there).

It's becoming increasingly apparent that unless I manage, through some divine intervention, to actually get an order of the 680 when it is in stock it might be until the next semester starts before I can start gaming again. Not the situation I want to be in.

Magically, the 670s have managed to stay in stock through launch day.

So, the question is, do I buy a 670, or do I stick it out for a 680? Or, do I go all kinds of crazy and buy my first AMD/ATI card and get a 7970?

What games are you wishing to play ?

Right now I'm gaming at 1920x1080, but I'd like to in a year or so, buy 3 monitors and set them up portrait, So then I'd probably be running 3 1920x1200.

I'd like to be able to play Skyrim, and ME3, but right now I only play Skyrim and Dragon Age Origin on my T420 which is a sad and painful experience.

For right now, If it were my money...

I'd grab a 670 and then if my frames dropped when I was in "triple monitor" I'd look for a second 670 or whatever was the new hotness

I'd say the 670. It's the cheapest and it's almost as fast (sometimes faster) than the 7970.

680 over the 7970 for sure but I haven't read up on the 670 yet or how much the price and performance difference is.

Thanks for all the help, after re-reading the review, and looking at all the advice, I think I'm going to go with the 670, and then plunk down money later if I need to get another in SLI (for whatever monster game comes out in 2015 that hard-core rocks my aging and decrepit machine).

Yeah, it certainly looks like the GTX 670 is the best deal out there so far. Hopefully AMD catches a clue and reduces their prices on the 7900 and 7800 series. They are all good cards, but NVIDIA reset the price/performance metric, and AMD really needs to respond.
