whs 2011 disaster

So got me a copy if Whs 2011 to upgrade from whs v1. Wanted to install it on an old 74 GB raptor but accidentally installed on a different drive. So wiped everything put in the correct drive and start over. no matter what I tried would not install on the raptor. So back to square one. Finally get it all set up and install all the old drive s in the pool. I had all my data backed up on a 1.5 tb drive @ 750 GB or more of photos movies music etc. I copy everything from the backup drive to the pool add the drive to the pool and then make the mistake of formatting the drive after adding it. It wiped out the entire pool thankfully I have all the original photos. 325GB of the past 7 years. I lost half of my 15GB of music. 200 GB of backed up movies and 50GB or so of other stuff. Running recovery software now to see if I can get anything back. Ugh

I’m sorry to hear that. I can only imagine how you feel. Truth be told, if I put myself in your position I would be kicking myself but the Wife would be none too pleased with me either.

I’m not sure how you can correct this problem.

I’m still using my old HP EX490 MediaSmart Windows Home Server (v1 / PP3) but I also run a backup server LX195 at a remote location (for additional backup security). Sometimes I upload photos and other files to it. Other times I just put files on a HDD and sneaker-net it over to the remote site / server.

I have at least one Windows Home Server 2011 license so I was thinking of replacing the old HP EX490 MediaSmart server but was a bit concerned I might lose some data in the process. I also don’t like losing the drive extender pooling functionality and don’t want to have to resort to Drive Bender or FlexRAID to regain that functionality.

I was actually able to turn on hidden files and folders and was able to recover from my original backup drive some of my files. The data recovery is still running so there is still some hope there. I'm running Drive Pool not drive bender. Just researched and heard better things about it.

I use drive pool and have been happy with it so far. It sounds like there was a miscommunication regarding what the reformat was going to do, perhaps e-mail the guy from drive pool and let him know they might want to clarify the prompt if you did it through the program. I was in contact with him several times during the beta and was very responsive and helped me fix a few problems. I know its too late for you, but it might help future users
