Weve all read the various media reports concerning this from yesterday. And certainly the reactions from all sides of the issue.
I spent the better part of the day doing research because some stuff was unclear or seemed incorrect somehow.
The folks were talking about are Dream Act Eligable folks who find themselves in this country without documentation. Folks that presumably entered the US with parent(s) and without proper authorization. What we call illegal aliens.
First off? Was this a deliberate pander by Obama? Of course it was. The election is coming in November so lets not pretend politics doesnt matter.
No doubt this makes Obama more attractive to thousands of Hispanic voters and other new immigrants...illegal or otherwise. The perception will no doubt be: He cares about us!
Fair enough. Ill get back to thoughts about the Dream Act later.
The big discussion yesterday and today centered on Obama's method.
We read "overreach"..."fiat" and I called him a Pharoah.
The media referred to his action as an Executive Order.
Please show me the Executive Order. I dont see it here:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-r...ecutive-orders
Rather what I do find is a policy change made by DHS
www.dhs.gov/files/enforcement/deferred-action-process-for-young-people-who-are-low-enforcement-priorities.shtm
Read all that linked and focus on these parts:
Does this Administration remain committed to comprehensive immigration reform?
Yes. The Administration has consistently pressed for passage of comprehensive immigration reform, including the DREAM Act, because the President believes these steps are critical to building a 21st century immigration system that meets our nation’s economic and security needs.
Is passage of the DREAM Act still necessary in light of the new process?
Yes. As the President has stated, individuals who would qualify for the DREAM Act deserve certainty about their status, and this new process does not provide that certainty. Only the Congress, acting through its legislative authority, can confer the certainty that comes with a pathway to permanent lawful status.
Having read all that? My thinking has changed somewhat.
My thinking has me wondering why exactly Republican members of the Senate have basically given..via inaction, the talking point and political advantage to Obama? The Dream Act sits tied up in the Senate and Obama walks away with the narrative.
Thats what bugs me the most.
We can go on and on about the perception that Obama rewrote law..but really to what end? Are we suggesting various government agencies can no longer put priorities on what cases become a focus?
I can make the case that Obama more or less sets priorities for the Justice Department so how is this different?
My irritation is better focused on the Senators that have done Republicans no favor by stalling the legislation.
But dont misunderstand. I still think Obama is an arrogant Pharoah but hey...hes done exactly what a politician does in this case. Taken credit for an issue that wasnt part of the campaign...but now is.
