Question Unable To Connect To Wireless Network

ASUS laptop/ Windows 7: There is a strong 4 bar wireless signal present. Automatic connection attempt brings up "...unable to connect..." notice. Went into 'Manually Connect', entered system ID name, security WEP, and the code, that works with all the other laptops, but this laptop is "...unable to connect..." The wireless adapter is, "...working properly..." Everything is there for it but it won't connect. The laptop adapter finds other networks RE: coffee shop wifi etc. with no trouble. I can't see any other settings.????

What I think Z is saying is...you need to log into your router and set it so that your laptop can "get" an IP address.

How do you mean 'log in' to my router? I am getting confused here.

We have a satellite ISP. There is a modem, a wireless router, and two laptops.

The laptop with XP connects to the wireless just fine. The laptop with Windows 7 won't connect (it connected to all other WiFi networks with no trouble. I have tried all of the manual settings I can think of. There is strong signal. I have manually entered into Windows 7, the wireless network name, WEP, and code or key. It won't connect.

ok, so now how is the router setup ?

    how about a make & model # ?

you would need to log into the router (i.e. 192.168.1.1 or similar) enter the username and password.

the other thing you could check on your end would be to see if your router is even "giving" you an IP.

open a command prompt and type ipconfig/all

then please post the results here

    The router is a D-Link WBR 2310

How do you mean "log into the router" ? I'm sounding stupid to me, how about you?

OK... ipconfig/all in command prompt gave me 2 IP numbers:
    192.168.6.100
    192.168.6.101

wHOOPS, I got those numbers from the laptop with XP. I will have to wait to get the IP numbers from the unit with the Windows 7 on it. I will then post them. What will I do with those IP numbers when I get them?

I'm just checking to see if the Win 7 machine even "gets" an ip from the router.

Since we're dealing with WEP here on win7, did the automatic connection give your router name and did it ask for a passphrase?

The network name for this router appears as an available wireless network with a good signal. Is the network key the same as a passphrase? I had entered the wireless network name and network key when I was attempting to set up a new wireless connection on that Win7 unit. The laptop is not here right now. I am going by memory. When you click on the automatic connection icon in the tray, it says "...unable to connect..."

Those don't look like standard IP addresses, as the third octet is usually 0 or 1, and I'd expect the last to be a single digit number. (edit: Google suggests that that router should use addresses starting 192.168.0.x). Who set all this up?

But in answer to your question, we just want you to post them here so we can check to see if the computer you are having trouble with is getting a correct IP address from the router.

As stated, you need to be able to log into the router to check things like the whitelist. Essentially, it's a list of MAC addresses which the router will allow to connect to the network. Since you seem a relative newcomer, I should point out that a MAC address is a unique number that all network devices have built into their firmware, and is unrelated to the IP address.

To get into the router, put this address into the nav bar of your browser:

    http ://192.168.6.1

That's a guess based on those IP addresses. If that fails, try:

    http ://192.168.0.1

(Note: remove the space between http and the ":" - that's there to stop the BBS parsing the text into link which probably won't work)

If it works, it looks like you get a page like this. If those don't get you anything other than a 404 error, then we'll have to show you some other commands.
