PC reboots itself after 5 seconds

Whats up guys long time since I've been on here. I decided to upgrade my old pc because it was no longer booting anyway. Here's the pieces I replaced my old rig with:

    - MSI X48c (LGA775)
    - Intel X9660
    - I have a geforce 7950 as a backup but my main video card is a 8800GTS (which both work in my brothers PC)
    - two seperate power supplies one that I know works from my brothers computer.

For some reason it still is having the same issue which is that after I hit the power button, it will restart after approximately 5 seconds. It never posts and the video never responds to any sort of input.

The pieces I listed above were previously all in another PC which worked perfectly fine a few days ago.. it sounds like a power supply issue on the surface right? So I bought a new power supply, no dice. Then I took the power supply out of my brothers PC which definitely just worked and stilllll no dice.

Other things I've tried include taking the mobo's battery out to reset the BIOS, no luck.

I've got to mention though that ONE time i got to the BIOS where it wanted me to set the time n date and then when I hit save and exit it went back into the same boot loop.

Any idea what could be happening here?
Also sorry if this is not the correct forum to be posting this in, didn't know where exactly to put this more general issue.

    Thanks!

Re: PC reboots itself after 5 seconds

I'd start by taking the MB out of the case and set it up on a box, to eliminate the possibility of the board shorting in the case, with just the bare necessities .
CPU with cooler Video card and one memory stick in the farthest slot from the cpu.
If it will post then ad the HD with the OS, if it will go into windows then ad the memory sticks on at a time rebooting after each one.
If it doesn't post with just the bare set then swap out the memory sticks on at a time.
If it still doesn't post then you'll need to try the video card and CPU in another system and if they both work then you've got a bad MB !
EDIT: check the voltage on the MB Battery, if it's lower than 3.0v, replace it.

Re: PC reboots itself after 5 seconds

Good advice there. A new build which does this is usually down to a short. Most commonly between m/b and case, but I've seen it in a drive or in a cable. Make sure that the only fan plugged in initially is the CPU fan. If the first bare POST fails, try another fan.

Also: what is the rating of the "working" PSU? If it's not powerful enough to fire up the rig then you'll see this.

So same issue with rebuild as before rebuild/upgrade.Everything swapped out/changed except for memory ?
That would be a good place to start.

There was new memory in the new board as well :/. I'm not home at the moment but I'll give it a shot outside of the case in case of a short issue. Also I have a fanless CPU cooler so that isn't even plugged in..

    Thanks guys,
    Nico

EDIT: Had also checked the mobo battery, looking good there.

It might be the fact that you do not have a fan plugged into the CPU header. Check your BIOS & see if there is an option that shuts it down if it gets below so many RPM.

    He can't get into BIOS...

But he has a point: default for many boards is a power-off if no fan is detected on the CPU fan header. Plug a working fan onto that header and try again. Don't worry about the other headers, just the one marked as for the CPU. Make sure that the fan turns.

Re: PC reboots itself after 5 seconds

Damn so I took everything out of the case and set it on a nice little anti-static cloth and plugged only the 24-pin mobo power, 4-pin cpu power and pci-e video card power cords in. I also plugged a fan into the CPU fan header. I cycled through various memory sticks and finally found one/a pair which allowed the system to stay on for more than 5 seconds.

I had nothing else plugged in - no video cards, no HDD's, nuffin.

Now it stays on without rebooting itself every few seconds but there is still absolutely no video out from either video cards (the 8800GTS or the 7950). Both of which worked on my brothers PC.. I also tried both of my power supplies which are 600w and 650w (my old and confirmed broken one was 600w, so that shouldn't be a problem).

Anyway nothing seems to be working, I cannot get the damn system to even POST.

I've been putting together PC's most of my life now (i'm 21) and have never encountered a system that absolutely refuses to do anything like this! Gah! Haha

Well, not having much of a Intel back ground at all, I may well be way off with this but I don't see the X9660 listed in the the CPU support list for the X48c MB.
