    possible scam?

i just got a call from a number unavailable to caller id , from a guy with a thick, possibly east indian accent about my windows computer.
he said he was from microsoft and that there was a serious malicious virus problem with my computer.
i tried asking him how he knew there was even a windows computer in the house. answer was unintelligable.
he insisted i turn on my computer and follow his instructions.
at this point i just hung up.

is this likely legit or a scam?

Is everyone getting these now? We've had them here (UK) for over a year now, but it's nice to see that the whole English-speaking (I think that's the language Americans speak - it's hard to tell sometimes... ) world. Yea, I had my first one a couple of weeks ago. I meant to string him along, but the first thing out of my mouth was: "Wow, I wondered when I was going to get one of these calls: I'm the only person I know who hasn't had this scam call!" At which point he hung up.

I got a similar call but it was slightly different. The guy said he was from the company in charge of maintaining my Operating System, but not Microsoft. Said Microsoft would never call me. I told him microsoft calls me all the time.

He was quite persistent. So I asked him what Operating System(s) I was running, and how many.... He wouldn't answer just saying that he was in charge of maintaining it. Wanted to string him along further but saw no point and hung up.
