    NAS HDD speed

In a NAS storage unit will a 5400 RPM drive be noticeably slower than a 7200 RPM drive?

I need to upgrade the size of my HDDs and the 5400s are considerably cheaper.

I am not worried about the normal files but I have a large number of movies and hoping the slower drives will not degrade the playing of them.

How will you be using the "green" drives?

Raid array ? Just plain storage ?

In my WHS I have 5400 RPM drive, no issues at all with streaming any content. (though it is just a JBOD array)

A blu-ray movie with HD audio rarely tops 5MB/sec data rate (40Mb), so virtually any HDD is adequate.

    Re: NAS HDD speed

I upgraded to 2 2T 5400 drives and there was absolutely no difference in speed.

Just in case someone else was interested.
