    Exclamation PlanetSide 2 game night

I'm surprised that no one has posted about this yet. Seeing as how the NDA has been lifted.
I would really love to play this for a game night. If we could all agree an a server and a faction, it would be a lot of fun.

    http://www.planetside2.com

It is currently in beta and will eventually be a F2P game (Sorry Jeremy)
It can support 2000 players per server (Not a typo)
64 Square Kilometer Map (will be 3 at launch)
    Tanks, Jets, Transports
    3 factions
    No rounds
    Day-Night cycle
    Just constant badassness
    http://www.planetside2.com/overview

    Please consider this game!

There is no F2P catch yet. That's why I'm suggesting it
The game is still in Beta, and real world currency hasn't been implemented yet.
    Its literally free for now
You can sign up for the beta now. The open beta should start next week or so
The game is primarily done. Just a few bugs here and there (its an actual beta)
    It is so much fun

So get hooked on it now before they make you pay for it?

Free to play = pay to win

Planetside 1 was a cool game with a lot of neat ideas, buy the whole free to play phenomenon is lame.

Wasnt Doom/Quake F2P? And the BF and COD franchise? I dont get why people are so angry over F2P... and then turn around and bash MMO because of their sub prices.

Angry gamer not like choices. Too many options make angry gamer smash! Angry gamer punch kitten and NOT PLAY ANY GAMES!

I'm teasing... really, why the angst over F2P? I havent seen "pay to win" on a LEGITIMATE game in a loooong time. Most of the Pay-fers are more model looks, or latteral weapons that I have seen. Maybe I'm out of the loop and missed something. I'm old, it happens.

You really don't understand what F2P means? "free to play" isn't the same as "pay up front". "free to play" actually means FREE... unless you want to win, then you need to buy equipment and stuff. Most of the F2P games i've seen are absolutely awful unless you start paying for stuff.. and then whoever pays has such a big advantage that they win.. hence, pay 2 win.

I don't care for the model. I'd rather pay up front and have access to everything in the game (aside from cosmetic nonsense like you mentioned) for as long as I want. MMO subscriptions suck way more. I've been playing BF3 for almost a year now and have paid $110 into it ($60 up front + 50 for Premium aka DLC). Compare that to a $15/mo MMO. Over a year-long period thats $180, and theres no ceiling on it.. you just keep paying until you stop playing.

The entire reason i posted and suggested this game, is because it is still in beta. Meaning that the real world currency hasn't been put in.
Meaning that this game is TRULY FREE, no catch or any of that crap.
The only currency in the game is the in game currency that is earned by just playing.
There aren't any guns other that the default guns.
All attachments and stuff are not all fully implemented.

Right now everything is actually earned by the players. Not bought.

I guess nobody is even giving it a chance.

Well, you need a beta key to sign up and i'm not going to pre-order it just to get access. I'm also confused, if its F2P (eventually) whats with the $40 "alpha squad" thing? Its not that I'm not interested in giving the beta a shot, I'm just probably going to give the game a pass in the long run

F2P is great for kids who can't get mom and dad to buy them a $50 game and they have time to spend unlocking all the crap.

I'd rather pay $50/$60 up front and not get nickle and dimed to death on weapon unlocks.

F2P is definitely the future though. Nobody is making any money on the $15/month MMOG anymore except for WoW, and even then, their subs are estimated to be way down. It would have been cool if Planetside 2 did what Guild Wars did (pay $50 for the game up front, free multiplayer for player, you pay for expansion packs). At least that's like traditional DLC/expansion packs and you're getting big amounts of new content.

I guess if you think about, Guild Wars 1 kinda pioneered the F2P phenomenon.

And, you are right mpulliam, the MOBA style games (Dota, League of Legends, etc.) really do F2P well. The only thing you pay for is the cosmetic crap. That's good, but I think there's a certain implication from management that MMOGs have to turn a regular profit and I think MMOGs would be quicker to nickle and dime the players on necessary stuff. If that makes sense.

You dont need a beta key to sign up.
You sign up to get a beta key (for free). They are sending them out in waves.
You sign up for the beta under the Alpha squad ad.
Make a SoE account and wait for the beta invite. Worth it, IMO.
I would still really like to play this game for a game night. We could all fit on a team.

The Alpha squad thing is basically for bragging rights. It just gives you some cosmetic stuff, and 40.00$ worth of whatever Sony uses for $. Nothing special really. Also Immediate access to the beta, you dont really need to buy it to get in.

So far the only thing that will cost real $ is cosmetic stuff. Camo, and stuff like that.
All the guns that aren't in the game yet, look like they will only be purchasable with the earned in-game currency. Not bought with cash
You can see some of the stuff in the unfinished store, its just useless crap.
A smiley face on the windshield or something isn't going to give anybody an advantage.
Once again the money HAS NOT been implemented and won't be until the game actually launches. So who gives a crap if its going to F2P. Its free now, that's what counts.

EDIT: BTW F2P is also nice for broke people or unemployed people. Not just kids. This is still a recession last i checked (at least in the US).
