Do SATA III disks downgrade to SATA I/II

Just about to replace a failed Seagate in a Sony VAIO all-in-one with a new WD drive but all new HDDs seem to be SATA III and I would guess that the Sony machine is either SATA I or II.

Can anyone confirm for me that this new drive will downgrade to the SATA II/I as required?

    Thanks,

That's not to say that ALL boards and controllers will correctly recognize and handle SATA3 drives. If your controller is older, you may have better success with a SATA2 drive than with SATA3. So I'd suggest looking for a SATA2 drive, they are available.
