WiFi Boosters/Extenders/Repeaters - real or scam?

Are those WiFi range extenders legit? There are some no-name ones, but some legit companies like Linksys and Netgear make them too. I'm talking about ones like this:

If the signal is already attenuated on the far side of the house, won't getting one of these repeaters just be enhancing an already weak signal?

Looking at that, it's a repeater, not a booster. So effectively it creates a new signal , the same as the original, but closer to the destination than the original (if used correctly). It's the same as moving router and device closer together.

Think of a repeater as a 1+1=1.75 You put the repeater where you still get a decent signal from the AP and the repeater then allows more distance overall. Boosters or pumping up the signal can cause a lot of signal issues so while you may be able to see the signal it may suck (throughput, errors etc)
