ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z + FX-8350

Hi all, I will be building a new PC, with a budget of about $1,200 max. I was thinking of buying a ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z with an FX-8350, 16gb RAM GTX 670 4GB and an SSD drive, I have a case PSU, etc etc, My question is before I go out and buy the ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z will the FX-8350 work as soon as I put it in without a BIOS update? Because I can't update the BIOS unless I have an older AMD CPU on hand correct? If the FX-8350 needs an update to work on that board. I will be screwed if I can't update the BIOS

They just came out with a new bios supporting the new cpu Yesterday, so odds of you getting a board with the newest bios is pretty slim.
See if any of your buddies might have a AM3 CPU you can use when you get the new board, so you can upgrade the bios.
I can't say for sure that you'll ABSOLUTELY need the older cpu to flash the bios, it would be nice to think that ASUS learned from last version of this board, but I'd play it safe if I were you !

Hi, thanks I actually just saw that now on their site. It's really messed up that some people will buy that board and the FX-8350 and think it will work just like that when it most likely won't. All my friends have Intel like me Oh, I was wondering say If I download the new BIOS now, and when I build my new PC with that board can I just use a USB flash drive to flash it even with the new FX-8350 in it? Using the tools in the BIOS to flash? Or it won't post at all, even to get into the BIOS?

If it's anything like the C5F board was with the first FX CPU's then it won't even post with the new cpu.
Worst case you might take the board to your nearest computer shop and have then flash the bios for you with a older AM3 cpu, it shouldn't cost that much to get done.
It sure wouldn't hurt to DL the new bios, then try it with the new cpu and see what happens. All you need is for it to post so you can get into the bios and flash it !

The latest FX chips are so similar to the original Zambezi, it will post without a problem even if an older BIOS is on board. You will probably want to update your BIOS after it does successfully post, as it adjusts some of the turbo core settings to better work with the new chips.

Ok thanks so much guys, now I think I will take a chance and download the newest BIOS and just go buy the ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z + FX-8350 and like JoshMST said and I cross my fingers it will post so I can flash it in the BIOS

Last question would the older Crosshair V Formula support the FX-8350? I want this board because it has an older PCI slot, and I have an X-Fi Fatality card I want to use not the so called X-Fi fake onboard sound that the Crosshair V Formula uses

Well, if you check out my Sig. you'll see that's just the combination that I'm running now.
Yes the regular Crosshair 5 Formula does fully support the 8350 with the new 1703 bios.
Oh did I mention that this combination is a sweet OC'er.

OK thanks yes I see it now in your sig. But I will be buying this board without the newest BIOS and will have to flash it after the fx 8350 is in before the updated bios will it still post so I can flash it through the bios to the newer 1703 bios?

It should post, I updated the bios before I took the 8150 out so I can't say for sure, but the two CPU's are really close in design that I don't think you'll have any problems.

OK good to hear. I will try that, as I'm sure it should post without a problem, as they are close in design as you said and I have read to. Will be putting together this build in 2 weeks so I want to plan and research a lot more before I purchase all my parts. So far newegg is sold out, of this CPU thats in 3 days time, Micro Center has it for $199.00 boxed, real good deal

Hi T1125P, how did you get on with your bios update? I'm in the same boat as you and this weekend, I'm going to attempt to build my new pc which has the Amd fx 8350 with the crosshair v formula-z motherboard. Also now that you've had this setup for a while, what do you think of it?

Hey Rich, actually, after reading all the reviews and benchmarks I ended up buying a Core i7-3770k for me it was a better choice I paired it with a ASUS Maximus V GENE. I'm sorry that I could not be much more of a help with your build. But like JoshMST posted it will work with that motherboard, just download the newest BIOS now and burn it to a CD for the board you want to buy then after you build your PC just go into the BIOS and look for ASUS EX Flash it will then update your BIOS from your CD.
