Bios Question and possible problem.

I have MSI K9NBPM2-FID MB in server. Works great but wanted to update to 4850e processor from 3800+ I am using.

I am on bios ver 5.1

About a month a go, I checked MSI site and saw CPU supported. Bought processor and went back to MSI site. Here is were my problem begins.

First, while the model is still listed on the archive, the CPU support list no longer displays any info.

OK.........., so I will just update to newest BIOS to be sure. Only problem now is that their site says I have to use their windows updater to update, and that updater apparently needs to be run from windows, but.... this is not a windows box, it is a FreeBSD box. So... I am wondering if anyone just might be able to help

1.Anyone able to tell me which bios version is necessary to support this CPU? (if so and it is 5.1 or older, I am good to go

2.Or probably better still, anyone know where I can get a bios and updater that does not require windows

I would hate to have to load up a windows install just to update the BIOS

now why they say that the only way is their live updater, i don't know.

i made a bootable thumb drive and flash from that for quite a while now.

Thanks for the list. It confirms that i will need the latest 5.8 version.

In looking at the bios file, I have a question. It includes a bios flasher program Afud408.exe. The enclosed read-me mentions an AMI flash program called adsfi719.

Is it just that they changed the program name or is AFUD408.exe the wrong one?

i find those read me files to be somewhat dated and generic. i can't find anything to give a definition to the "adsfi719".

the "AFUD408.exe" is the one you use.

OK, I followed all of the directions, but one problem. When I finish, I end up with an empty USB disk, there appear to be no system files on it. In order to run the HP USB program I need to run as administrator. Is my problem that I am running the HPUSBFW program from a 64-bit windows system?

I would like to try to figure this out, otherwise I did find my old floppys and an old floppy drive I can use if I have to.

under folder options/view, do you have show hidden files enabled?

That doesn't seem to be the problem. The folders view is set to display hidden and system file. If I recall right however, Autoexec.bat and config.sys were not normally hidden, and these don't copy over either.

I think am going to try a newer version of the HPUSB program. (or just breakdown an fire up an old win 98 box
