Can the HP / COMPAQ / ASUS A8AE-LE now take a 2.93 or 3.0 GHz CPU?

    Mainboard: A8AE-LE

Vendor: Compaq Presario SR1703WM Desktop PC

    Hello,

I recently was given an ASUS A8AE-LE motherboard, which was manufactured for HP / COMPAQ.

It has ample room for memory expansion with the single sticking point that this 2005-2006 era MB came with a 2.0 GHz CPU (AMD Althlon XP 64 X2 3800+ I believe) while the HP / COMPAQ specs page indicates that it will support up to a 2.5 GHz processor (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+).

My question is whether in the interim, subsequent improvements (e.g. new processors, upgraded BIOS) the board could now take a 2.93 -3.0 GHz + processor (perhaps with a BIOS flash upgrade).

Here is an example CPU I would like to wed to this board:

Home > CPUs (Processors) > AMD Athlon II >
AMD Athlon II 250 Dual Core Processor
AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz Socket AM3 Dual Core CPU (OEM)

Of course, the HP / Compaq site only provides info related to the 4800+ (2.5 GHz) upgrade, and I found the following comment, below:

"The 4000+ is the fastest single-core Athlon 64 microprocessor. This is a good upgrade processor for single-task oriented computers, for example, for game computers. At the same time, it may become difficult to find this processor in the future as AMD is phasing out production of this and other socket 939 processors. At this time (September 2006) the Athlon 64 4000+ and faster single-core Athlon 64 FX processors are no longer listed in AMD pricing list."

Where would I find additional information re: maximum CPU supported on A8AE-LE?

    Thanks to all.

The a8ae-le is a socket 939 board, and your link is to socket am3 cpu which is not compatible.
I don't remember but the 4800 socket 939 might have been the top of the line.
