(shudder - first post!)
So my big, slow storage drive (Samsung HD204UI, volume label "Attic") reports to be "At risk". (Windows notification + Intel RST)
First, what big dumb storage drive would you recommend for a desktop?
Points to consider: The case (Define R3), rubber grommets or not, features superb HDD physical coupling - which sucks. HDD vibrations are loud and clear, and can be felt when touching the side panels.
If it wasn't enough, the system stands on a slightly wobbly desk prone to feline blitzkriegs, so some degree of shock resistance is desireable.
As the headline says, I gravitate towards the WD30EFRX Red because if it's gyro-thingies, problem is it's too new to have long-term impressions. Do you think it's worth a $35 premium over the WD Green / $40 over 7200rpm barracuda of the same size? (prices in Israel, sad story)
Now, the problem with the old drive is hard to pin down.
When booting, the system stalls with an unresponsive splash screen and no beeps (connected to a 3GBps port on my ASRock H67M-GE).
I disconnect it and boot normally, then hotplug and everything is accessible.
SeaTools and Windows Disk Scanner found no errors.
Is it possible that the board misinterprets some signal as an error and the drive could work on another system?
