AMD Gigabyte Video Card update: 7950 vs 7870

    Current Setup:
    Mother Board: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
Power Supply: COOLER MASTER UCP RS700-AAAAA3 700W
Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366
    Memory: 12GB
    OS: Windows 8 Pro x64

    Info:
Built this machine in 2009. It has served me well.
But I feel the Graphics card is hitting it's end of life on new games.

It appears I can get the
Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB for $299
    or
Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB for $249

My motherboard only has PCI Express 2.0 slots.
Is the 7950 worth the extra $50 for my system or will the v2.0 slots be a limiting factor?

I am not expecting to upgrade CPU/Motherboard combo any time soon.

    Thanks for your help.

I think in the long run the 7950 is worth the extra $50 considering the extra Gb of memory and don't worry about the v2.0 slots bandwidth, you're not even gonna come close to filling it !

    Thanks..

That was what I thought but had no idea what how the lower version slot would effect me.

Amazon has a Sapphire 7950 for $280 after rebate, so your decision just became $20 closer. Personally I'd definitely go for the 7950 for the small price difference.

Well crap! I just went to find you the link for the Sapphire on Amazon and it seems they raised the price $20! It's now $300 after the rebate, and they are now saying 2-3 week ship time. I blame the Bitcoin miners. I did find a nice factory oc'd 7950 from Sapphire for $290 AR though.

I upgraded a few months ago to a pair of ASUS 2GB Radeon 7850's from a pair of 1GB GeForce GTX460's. Love my 7850's for gaming. At the time I had no idea of the new revisions of the 7000 series chips coming out. I paid $250.00 for each 2GB 7850.

Still the Radeon 7950 is a good card to get right now if the budget permits.
