Want to fold again after 11 year absence :-)

    Hi everyone!

Almost 11 years ago I did some folding on a Linux machine using the console application.

I've got an old computer (circa 2003) that I recently spruced up and installed a circa 2006 SuSE Linux distribution on. I don't dare install anything more "modern" than that on it, because even the 2006 Linux stuff runs a little slow (you should see how my browser is rendering some of these newfangled webpages. It's like ... lol!!). On a 2nd hard drive it's also got Windows XP which I recently updated up the kazoo, and it too, is really slow.

However, when I got the computer it was a top-notch custom job and it still works fine, so I've been wanting to put it to good use for some while. Have finally gotten around to it.

Anyway, I downloaded the legacy Linux console app, but I don't remember all the arguments you need to run the thing. I know it's "chmod " and then the name of the executable but when I do that it tells me I need more arguments. Anyone remember what all the needed arguments are?

Finally, I had joined a folding team (check my old posts). Does that group still exist? If so, I might as well stick with it.

    Welcome back

The following are the commands I think you will want to use.

Can we we get some detailed info of your current configuration ?

    Ubuntu:

    sudo apt-get install curl

To download the FAH client for 64 bit versions of linux, a requirement for SMP, type in (or copy/paste) the following commands. Enter one line at a time, in to the terminal command line, and press enter:

    mkdir -p ~/folding
    cd ~/folding
    curl -O http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...34-Linux64.tgz
    tar xzf FAH6.34-Linux64.tgz

After the FAH client is downloaded, the client needs to be configured. Please run these 2 commands:

    chmod +x fah6
    ./fah6 -configonly -smp

After the client is configured, there are different methods for starting the FAH client. The most basic method is to enter in following command:

    ./fah6 -smp -verbosity 9

    It's SuSE Linux 9.1. As I said, circa 2006. (32-bit Pentium)

I've already got a folder made and the executable is in there. Just don't know how to configure and run it.

There was a link to a how-to page on the page where I downloaded it, but it wasn't very helpful. I don't suppose they've got much in the way of help files anymore for legacy versions like that.

This worked (except I typed in "chmod +x FAH504-Linux.exe")

Hmm, I just tried this and got a "Permission denied" error message. :-/

In this case, it would only be ./fah I believe

After multiple attempts to get the old 5.04 version to respond to the commands, I gave up and installed v. 6.02 instead. This one worked much easier and I've finally got it running.

Hey guess what? I just checked my "MyFolding" web page and it says the last work unit I completed was on 2003-06-15.

    Almost exactly 10 years!

    Stunning!

So, what type of PPD are you getting now with that old but true machine?

You'll have to refresh my memory on what PPD means.

BTW, yesterday I checked my machine's specs, and it's really not all that bad. When I got it (circa 2004), it was a state-of-the-art custom machine with all the latest and greatest stuff. 2.4 gigahertz Pentium and (I think) 2 gigs of RAM. More than enough to run FAH6 at a decent clip.

There are ways of actually monitoring that...

What is your folding handle ?
