Question ext. USB HDs and Hammerfall DSP sound problems for Gigabyte EP45-UD3P MB

I originally bumped a thread in the memory section, but decided it would be better to post here instead:
http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.p...GB-RAM-Vista64 (original thread from 4 years ago)

My brother just gave this computer (yes, it has the same MB and some other stuff as my main one in my specs below but his is running Windows 7 64-bit) to my son and is going out-of-town for a while and I now need to get it running. Was having trouble and I just finally got it running again without two external HDs and strange sound card thing. Just noticed the CPU was running at 72C, so that's a little high so I'll reseat it with AS5 before I continue. He had it in storage for about 6 months before he got it out about a month ago.

Just noticed in CPU-Z that the RAM shows up as PC2 6400, so maybe that's part of the reason I had so much trouble 4 years ago. Apparently, he was supposed to get the same RAM, but it was not.

    Here are the specs:
    OS: Window 7 64-bit
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8600 Wolfdale
MB: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P (rev. 1.1, F9 latest bios)
HS: Intel stock sink and fan
RAM: Corsair 4GB(2x2GB) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM 1066 (PC2 8500) TWIN2X4096-8500C5 (he has 2 sets of these for a total of 8GB he wants to run with Vista64bit) >> there is a possibility that this ram is actually PC2 6400 (comes up like this in CPU-Z)
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon HD 5450 (dual monitor setup)
    PSU: Enermax Infiniti 720W
    HD: One (1) Western Digital Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200rom 32MB cache SATA 3.0GB/s
External USB HDs: two (2) > not sure of size or brand right now > not hooked up right now
DVD-ROM/burner: (not sure but it's PATA)
SOUND CARD: RME Hammerfall DSP Multiface (PCI card with firewire connection for outside unit) > not hooked up right now

    1. (COMPLETED, nevermind with this one then) Anyway, this thing doesn't even recognize the two external USB HDs. Any ideas why? Any ideas what I should set the integrated peripherals in the BIOS for this to work?

    2. It also has a PCI card for the sound card with a firewire connection on the outside. The external device is an RME Hammerfall DSP Multiface and the latest drivers from last month are installed. The computer does not like this either for some reason. Any ideas on the correct BIOS settings so this will work?

Thank you any help and I should have the CPU reseated mid-week to test stuff out.

Re: ext. USB HDs and Hammerfall DSP sound problems for Gigabyte EP45-UD3P MB

Got CPU reinstalled (I wish I would have remembered that I had a spare Intel HS BEFORE I tried the screwed up old one).

Anyway, running fine so far and one external is running now as well. Got the 2nd external HD and sound to deal with now.

    1. EDIT: got the second USB ext. HD working with no problems. No I may save the sounds for tomorrow. So question one has been done.

    2. Any ideas on getting the sound to work? Thanks.

EDIT AGAIN: the sounds works; now I just have to put it back in the case.

Question Re: heat problems with ext. USB HDs and Hammerfall DSP sound

OK, so everything runs, but the ext. USB HDs and sound thing seem to be running too hot. One ext. USB HD is running a little hot and the sound thing is also running a little hot. This would not normally alarm me, but the second ext. USB HD seems to be running excessively hot! I have unplugged both ext. HDs until the problem is solved or until we really need the space.

I've also been trying to run HDDScan to try and find out the vendorID and productID, etc of these hard drives. It seems that one is a Samsung and the other a LaCie, but both seem to have Samsung vendorID numbers. Is this correct? I'm using this info to change a registry setting so the HDs power down (spin down) when not in use. Maybe this will work or not. Is there any site online that shows the vendorID and productID of HDs if I know all the info given by HDDScan? Thank you.
