Detroit files for bankruptcy. Try not to be too surprised!

Detroit, once one of the greatest cities in the greatest country is now (finally) officially bankrupt. A city that was run by Democrats for over 50 years on policies that our current President pushes.

You can (and naturally will) try to make it a Democrat vs Republican issue, so here are some interesting facts (which don't really prove either way):

    http://www.businessinsider.com/depre...tistics-2013-7
    Detroit's population has plunged 63% since 1950.
    ...and it's down 26% since 2000.
The unemployment rate hit a high of 27.8% in July 2009.
As of April 2013, the unemployment rate was at 16%.
Even though the population fell 63% since 1950, the municipal workforce fell by just 40%, adding to the strain on public finances.
Detroit has the highest violent crime rate of any large U.S. city
...it's five times higher than the national average.
40% of the city's street lights don't work.
78,000 structures and 66,000 lots are abandoned.
Arson accounts for 1,000 of 12,0000 fires per year.
...60% of those arson fires are in dilapidated or empty buildings.

^^^ You're right, Pehu. Its not a Republican vs. Democrat issue.

    Its solely a Democrat issue.

Detroit is a Democrat shithole and has been for more than 50 years.

    They own it.

Its a pit that was built with hard work and destroyed by false promises.

    More examples will follow.

    Yeah, exactly.

The United States goes bankrupt and it's George Bush's fault.

Detroit goes bankrupt (been under Democratic leadership since 1962 or something) and it's nobody's fault.

Lol yeah, Detroit's problems are all obviously in part the fault of Republicans! Um, what part would that be considering Detroit has been a 100% Democrat stronghold for decades. The people of Detroit are 100% to blame for their own problems. They've had decades to fix those problems and could have voted for change many times but they chose to vote the status quo every time. No, they don't choose to change their situation in the least. The current residents are descendants from a people that chose to burn their city down in an attempt to get whatever it is they thought they wanted. Guess what? 40+ years later and they're STILL burning their city down!

That's it isn't it? The reason Detroit's woes are in part Repubs fault. Detroit was built while Republicans were in office so technically it's their fault anything was built there in the first place! Let's face it, if there were no buildings to burn down, there would obviously be no arsons and it stands to reason there would be less crime as well. Damn those sneaky Republicans! What's happened in Detroit is exactly like what's going on the country as a whole now and the consequences of decades of liberal feel good policies are easy to see when using places like Detroit and California (especially LA) as examples.

I have an idea that just might work to fix the Detroit problem. We convince Canada that Detroit is actually part of Ontario! We just go through one night, change all the signs to metric and English/French and maybe put up a "Tim Horton's coming soon!" sign or two. Sure, at first the Canadians aren't going to buy it, but after a few more years of our neglect and hiring college kids to make YouTube films showing how not all parts of Canada are so nice, they'll eventually start to believe it must be a forgotten part of the Great White north.

You do realize there has been several Tim Hortons in Detroit for quite some time now?

By the way, we'd notice Detroit... too much gun violence to be anything but American :3

The Unions share a large part of the blame but you can bet they'll blame somebody else too.

Um, of course I knew that, because Detroit IS after all part of Canada.. I think it's terrible what you Canadians have let happen to that city too. I only hope you guys can get in there and clean it up.

And btw... there's a difference between "Democrats running a city into the ground" and "A city that has been and is continuing to be run into the ground contains very few people who vote Republican".

You might wish to... but you really haven't proven which is the cause, which is the effect, and which is the side-effect.

And there's also a big difference between: "A democrat", "a libtard", "a liberal", and "a socialist".

    . . .
Mince words all ya like but the cause is fiscal lunacy. The effect is insolvency. And the folks running the show for decades all come from the same her(D).
