    Intel Core i5 question

I just bought a system kit from Newegg that is based on the Intel Core i5 4670K. It has been a long time since my last build with an Athlon XP-M, which still had pins on the CPU. So this new set-up is really breaking new ground for me.

The question that I have has to do with mounting the processor and the use of thermal paste. The Intel instructions are a series of step-by-step drawings that illustrate the installation process without text. They show installing the heat sink straight onto the processor without any thermal paste or thermal pad. However, in looking at the face of the heat sink there are 3 stripes of grey paint like compound. Do these grey stripes take the place of thermal paste? It looks like it would be a real mess to remove if I decide to add an aftermarket cooler in the future.

the 3 "stripes" is the factory thermal paste.
