Tim Sweeney/others question value of AMDs hUMA in APUs

    http://vr-zone.com/articles/epic-gam...uma/53374.html

A legitimate question that Sweeny asks and AMD dodges is whether hUMA is worth it considering the economics of coding for such a platform...the performance payoff for the additional complexity of coding for hUMA is marginal.

Sweeney's Unreal engines are the most widely used game engines on the planet- by far. If he says AMDs hUMA is a bad idea, I'm inclined to listen.

Meh, vr-zone sorta sensationalized this one.

Tim's main beef (and it is a good one) is that hUMA is still non-trivial to implement in code. The issue is software support with coding tools. Using OpenCL or DirectCompute is still not easy and parsing those workloads that could take advantage of GPUs in a non-gaming/3D situation is another hurdle. So yes, doing hUMA right now sucks.

AMD responds with info we were given not long ago. HSAIL (intermediate layer) is on the way to improve the software side. C++ and Java are early targets that will implement native support for hUMA. Software support will get better by next year. Once these three things are in place, then we will see support for hUMA increase. It won't be gangbusters necessarily, primarily because AMD does not own the CPU market.
