Need help understand difference between processors re graphics

I'm a heavy computer user but I get confounded by all the processors on the market. More importantly, I don't understand why my processor struggles to handle editing HD video clips in Adobe Premiere Pro.

I have a five year old laptop (Compaq CQ42) and I increased the ram to 6Gb. The processor is an i5 M460 rated at 2.53GHz and I run 64bit W7, yet when it comes to running Premiere Pro or Lightroom, it is slow as a dog.

What really confuses me is the difference between my processor and a more modern i3. Which is better? If I were to buy a 500 laptop now, would the processor be able to handle the graphics better?

I really need some basic pointers on what to look for when upgrading my laptop. My budget is small considering I do so much AV editing but that's all I have. Do modern processors (i.e. less than two years old) automatically handle graphics better?

Basically, can I buy a better laptop with a faster graphics processor for 500 and happily edit HD AV using the Adobe suite?

Which flavor of CS are you using ?

Depending on what version of the program, it may benefit from a dedicated graphics card (GPU acceleration) and/or a SSD.

Hi mmettin. I have CS6. Is the later version easier on the processing? And would I be able to pick up a machine with a dedicated graphics card within my budget?

Short answer, you would need to increase your budget.

Though I have no idea if GPU acceleration is available with this particular laptop.

Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CS6. This document lists the video card by series. The minimum amount of RAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CS6 is 256 MB. Photoshop 13.1 cannot display 3D features if you have less than 512 MB of VRAM on your video card.

Important: This document is updated as newly released cards are tested. However, Adobe cannot test all cards in a timely manner. If a video card is not listed here, but was released after May 2012, you can assume that the card will work with Photoshop CS6.

Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model. (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)

    nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 series

    nVidia Quadro 400, 600, 2000, 4000 (Mac & Win), CX, 5000, 6000, K600, K2000, K4000, K5000 (Windows & Mac OS)

    AMD/ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series

    AMD/ATI FirePro 3800, 4800, 5800, 7800, 8800, 9800, 3900, 4900, 5900, 7900

    AMD/ATI FireGL W5000, W7000, W8000

Intel Intel HD Graphics, Intel HD Graphics P3000, Intel HD Graphics P4000, Intel(R) HD Graphics P4600/P4700

Note: ATI X1000 series and nVidia 7000 series cards are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in Photoshop CS6. However, some basic GL functionality can be available for both these cards.

Do I understand correctly that GPU acceleration is needed for good performance and that any CPU will be slow?

Laptop i3-7 aren't the same as desktop i3-7s. Most likely you only have a dual core CPU with hyper threading. If you get a new laptop look for a CPU that has a "q" in the name. If it does it will be a quad core.

To really give you some good advice / support can you supply some additional information:

    - The full specs for your current machine.
    - Your Windows Index Score. (Start -> right click My Computer -> Properties -> click the hyperlink nest to the rating)
    - What is the specific performance problem you are experiencing? Slow software startup slow, laggy response to mouse and keyboard input, slow render times, all of the above and / or something else?
    - Also, does it have to be a Laptop?
