Trying to chose a board for a I7-4790k.

I am having trouble picking between the :

    • ASUS MAXIMUS VI EXTREME
    • ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA
    • ASUS Z97-Deluxe

I was also wondering if I would lose anything using a z97 processor with a z87 motherboard?

they did so some changes in z97 compared to z87 but should be generally should be both work fine. Biggest issue you are likely to run in to is z87 board not having new enough bios installed to support the chip, asus has cpuless bios updating on their boards which other makers don't.

I would just go for z97 board and you could even look at some cheaper ones if can find one that has all what you need on it.

I would go for the Z97 Deluxe board if it has everything you are looking for in a motherboard. The Z97 Deluxe motherboard will run that I7 4790K without needing a bios update. I'm not sure about the other two motherboard boards you have listed.

Last year, when I went I7 4770 I chose the Z87 Deluxe as it had everything I needed and wanted in a motherboard, and I'm still happy with the board, and I personally am not doing any overclocking as everything is fast enough including my cpu. Even the ALC1150 HD Audio codec on my board is really decent for sound.

i would say generally assume min 6 months for bios version on a z87 board but then still issue of how old of stock is the board. since you won't know when it was really made and then sold to newegg/tiger etc

Thanks for the input, I think I will go with a board that I don't have to update. Just needed the advise from those who know more than I.

Do NOT use an X99 chipset..... you lose FPS and spend a ton of money to say that you have the best.... I would suggest an ASUS x97 but that is my bias opinion. I have loved my z87 maximus VI hero but it's all on you. If you don't plan on Overclocking and need to drop your budget look at a little less on your Motherboard... maybe a gigabyte.
