Question Windows 10 update fails :-(

So I just tried to do an update from my Windows 8.1 install to Windows 10 Home using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

It got the image, rebooted and bluescreened sometime after being 54% in.

The error I saw was "0xc1900101 - 0x3000D The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation"

Searching that string I get a ton of hits for the Windows 8 -> 8.1 update but no solutions.

I'm doing the update on a Gigabyte P34G which has been upgraded to 16GB of RAM.

Are you doing an in place upgrade?

Yes, I'm trying to do an in-place upgrade and selecting the default "keep my files and settings" option.

Not sure if this is helpful but it happens during the "Installing features and drivers" phase. Right after it copies the files and reboots.

OK, I tried it again and it died at 91% into "Installing features and drivers"

Well this is interesting. The little Windows 10 icon where you could reserve your upgrade changed a bit. On my desktop, the app says that the update is being rolled out and I'll be notified when I get it. On my problematic laptop, the message says that it's being validated against my particular setup.

I just downloaded the ISO for my in place upgrade.

No issues installing on my gaming laptop.

Maybe the ISO install would be the better way for you to go

I'll give that a shot when I get home.

If you don't mind me asking, what laptop do you have?

It's a couple years old at this point, and I upgraded to a SSD. Still going strong

OK, so looking at the specs it's a 1 year older version of what I'm running. You've got an Intel GPU for like 2d/normal tasks and the GeForce 660M kick in for gaming, right?

And everything is a seamless transition

I installed 10 last night on my old desktop, zero problems other than trying to learn that system at the same time I'm attempting to learn the iMac system.

Re: Windows 10 update fails :-(

OK, making a USB key out of the ISO seemed to do the trick. Windows 10 is installed and running. The only issue now is that my GeForce 760M is coming up with a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. Clicking on it says that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I installed the latest 353.62 drives from nVidia but this persists. Any thoughts?

Re: Windows 10 update fails :-(

So after hunting on Gigabyte's site, I saw they pushed out driver updates for laptops that essentially had the same hardware as mine but a newer graphics card. I got the newer Intel chipset drivers and after rebooting, my nVidia card is no longer non-functional. There must have been some weird conflict that the new drivers solved.
