For some reason I'm having a hard time finding a good answer to this question so I'm hoping someone here can help. Can you run overclocked (as in higher speed than the CPU officially supports) RAM on a non-unlocked CPU?
For example, could I run DDR4-3200 memory on a Z170 board (one that obviously supports at least that memory speed) with an i3-6100?
As he says: yes, most motherboards support independent memory overclocking, either by by bus speed or timings. But every current system is CPU-limited so you will detect no difference in anything except memory-specific benchmarks.
