Is it possible to use Win 7 & Win 10 upgrade at the same time?

So someone asked me this hypothetical and I'm hoping someone here would know the answer.

Let's say I have a desktop with Windows 7. I image the drive (or have the OEM disc) and then upgrade to Windows 10, so the desktop now has the upgraded Win 10 on it...BUT! some of my applications won't run in Win 10.

Hypothetical: Could a Virtual Machine be set up on the desktop (now with Win 10) and install the original Win 7 in the VM? Would Win 7 activate in the VM while the Win 10 upgrade is running the desktop?

If you have any thoughts, please let me know.

    I appreciate your assistance.

If you upgraded your current PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10, your Windows 7 license expired 30 days after the upgrade. An update version of Windows 7 won’t work either. I suspect that you'd need a retail or OEM version that hasn’t been used—or has been thoroughly removed from another computer.
