I would really do a Windows system check or at least run one of the Fix It tools from MS website to see if something in the registry is hanging it up. Your updates shouldn't hang, even if it's Windows 7, it should still process properly. All my customer PC's still process updates normally and I am fairly anal about this feature working flawlessly with no issues.

Thought it was just me too. Updates are impossibly slow too and it's not a DISM/SFC/FIXIT/etc. problem. Perfectly clean system.
Anything I can do to move it along faster? I tried running it overnight a month ago and that didn't work either. There has to be something I can try.

It is now called just Fix It tool center. Browse through the categories to the last one "Resolve problems that prevent you from updating Windows" and start installing and applying the fixes in there to see if it helps you.
