Nvidia Titan X (Pascal) + Titan Xp = SLI???

I have a workstation with a Titan X (Pascal) videocard. It uses an Asus Maximus VII Gene motherboard that should support SLI. Since it's pretty hard to find a Titan X (Pascal) video card, I ordered up one of those new Star Wars special edition Titan Xp cards, thinking that since it's close enough to the Titan X, that I could SLI the pair.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case. I've gone through everything I can think of, including updating all the drivers, reseating the video cards, swapping slots, etc. Both cards work fine, independently, but under GPU-Z, it shows that "SLI DISABLED" as the status, and under the Nvidia control panel, no SLI controls appear.

Is there something I'm overlooking, or are these two cards simply not compatible for SLI?
