Which Radeon?!?!?!

After looking at a lot of video cards I finally decided to go with a Radeon. Unfortuneatly I can't decide on which one. My limitations are that it has to be less than US$120. The features I want are DVD hardware playback and a TV out. The one that I want currently is the Radeon VE 32 MB DDR. Is that good?

I currently own a Radeon VE and it work pretty good for all the features it has. The big plus is the on-board DVD hardware decoder. Just plug in your DVD player and it works. second is the option of running a flat panel display without needing anything special. Third is T.V. out, it sucks as a regular monitor, but its great to have a 27" tv to run video on while your editing it on your monitor, or web browsing, or whatever. The dual monitor support is only good if you have very similar, or more to the point, the same two monitors. I tried it with a 14" and 15" and it ran both at the resolution of the primary monitor. for gaming it may not be the best choice, but its fine if your not a framerate freak. I run autocad 2000 with that card and it does 3D rendering and animation great. I guess if its good enough for CAD and engineering software its good enough for games. I have heard some people can tweek it to get about 4000 3D marks in 3Dmark 2001, but I have only gotten 2100 and the highest recorded is about 2500. For the money, you cant beat it. Look around online for a better price, I got mine 2 months ago at best buy for $100.

If GAMES is what you want it for, Go with the 64meg DDR VIVO, i got mine for $159, but that was at a retail store a month ago, you can probably get it for like $130... the trade off in game speed with a VE is about 1/3 slower...

For $100 you can get a KYRO 2 based card that is actually a little faster than my 64meg Radeon... 2d not as clean and no VIVO but kick ass games for the $$$

Get the Radeon 64DDR Vivo, it will do all that you want it to and you can then also flash the bios with a Radeon 64DDR SE bios and then you'll have some of the speed of an SE Radeon. A stock Rad 64DDR runs at 183/183 the SE runs at 198/198
But if you can find a Radeon 64DDR SE within your price range go for it, because they have the fastest memory chips

As an ATI Radeon owner since 11/2000, I have had this vid card in a three systems. We also own the Kyro 11, Hercules. I have installed this in both our systems, Athlon, and The Kyro 2 is certainly not as good a vid card as the Radeon, but it cost almost double the Kyro 2. For the money the Kyro 2 is a great vid card, for the average user.

I must agree that the Radeon VIVO 64 DDR is certainly the best choice available at this time. The post above this one is certainly right on the mark. For about $150.00 you can have this card, if you want more fps, flash the frimware on the vid card and you have just what you want. The Radeon SE will hold its ground against anyother vid card out there. The GF3 and Radeon SE has features that probably most of game writers still are not writing code that will utilize all the features available on these cards.

I use Powerstrip to overclock my Radeon SE 64. I have tried a few of the other tweakers and they caused stability issues. When the tweakers did work, my 3DMark scores were lower than when I used Powerstrip. Plus Powerstrip gives you other functions that the tweakers won't (i.e. meory cleaner). Check out:

i wouldnt go with radeon, i purchased an all in wonder and it took me 3 frickin hours to install, including a full reinstall of win me. go for an geforce2mx man! you can get a 64 meg version for a good price. just do, it hasnt failed me yet, and it gives kick butt frame rates!

I have the Radeon DDR32 (retail) old version, purchased late 2000. Yesterday I received the Radeon 64 VIVO. This is a great improvment over the 32mb card. I have a question, The VIVO I just received is running at 198-198 memory mhz standard out of the box. The DDR 32 was 164-164 which is stated in ATI's site. I do not find any VIVO that runs at 198-198. The standard VIVO runs at slower mhz than this and the SE version is 200-200 (I believe) I may be off on these mhz.

I cannot find any information on this VIVO card. Not exactly this one. Does anyone else have this card?

HonestDRU::I had this kind of problem with the nVidia cards. Never with Radeon.

Did you clean out all of your old vid drivers? I mean clean out the registry as well as the actual files??

Anytime you change Vid Cards, you really should clean the system of the old drivers from the old vid card. This can be time consuming but will pay off with the new install.

The one thing that is better is a fresh install of Windows. I mean reformat and new install everything. Install the vid card drivers last. Install all drivers for everything (I mean everything) then install the new vid card drivers.

If you follow this proceedure you will not have a problem.

Where do I get Radeon SE 64MB DDR? On Pricewatch, I see an LE, a VE, a 32MB SDR and DDR, a 64MB DDR and SDR, but no "SE"

What do I do (I must have maximum Radeon performance, BTW)

I think you misunderstood my post. I did not find a SE Radeon. I ordered a retail version of the Radeon VIVO 64 from NewEgg. I received the SE version. How lucky can a guy get. The standard VIVO runs at 183-183. The Radeon VIVO 64 I received is running out of the box 198-198. You can get this card also at thier site. It is $153.00 and $10.00 for 3day fedex delivery. Can't go wrong with this.

That indicates that there are two [2] versions of the 64MB DDR, although I can't find info about the better.
