Unhappy Windows fails to boot. Can't even boot to safe mode. Help!

Windows fails to boot. Can't even boot to safe mode. Help!

Comodo Internet Security couldn't start properly one day. I uninstalled and restarted. Then reinstalled but failed. It asked me to restart. I was no longer able to boot into Windows after that.

When Windows started, it went directly into Startup Repair. After about 15 minutes, it stated it failed to repair with the following errors:

    PROBLEM SIGNATURE
    Problem Event Name StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03 unknown
    Problem Signature 04 292
    Problem Signature 05 Autofailover
    Problem Signature 06 1
    Problem Signature 07 MissingOSLoader
    OS Version 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

I tried system restore but failed. The error message was as follows:
(not exact wording since using another language)
System restore failed while logging in to restore from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070003)

I tried twice to boot into safe mode but failed.
I tried to press F8 rapidly or held down F8 key once computer started . None worked. They simply went straight to the "Startup Repair" loop.

What's up? How could I fix so it could boot again?
    Using Windows 7. Thank you.

It's my recollection that you might have to run startup repair a few times. Are you running the repair from a windows install disk ?

Ok. So you are fuked. This has happened in my circle plenty of times. Perhaps you have lost a boot sector, perhaps it's viral, or perhaps it's a "Ghost" but ultemetly you are ••••••.

Solution, atleast as I would do it (now as an old hat) New C: Drive. Get a friend to give make you a usb install stick (you can download the tool at microsoft.com, buy a 16 gb usb stick at the drug store) , buy a new drive (if you are broke you can get a 500gb spinning drive OR a 128gb ssd for about 60$) and move your current drive(s) to D: (E: ect) Then simply see if anything can be salvaged.

Like I said, I'm Old Hat, I've sepent DECADES trying (and OCCASIONALLY succeeding) to fix/solve/recover everything from grade 3 homework (in 1987) to my brothers grandsons briss photos, and at the end of the day, it's if you dont have a backup, it's probably not worth recovering. PERIOD.

Also I would recomend kicking Win 7 to the curb. You can get a Legit win10 key on ebay for about $6, and honestly M$ just wants you to keep using windows no matter what so, yea, DO THAT

Not from a disk. Ran like 4-5 times but failed every time.

Thank you for everyone who replied.

I created a bootable Windows 7 USB drive using Rufus with the following settings:

    Partition scheme: MBR.
Target System type: BIOS or UEFI-CSM.
    File System: NTFS.
Cluster Size: select the 4096 bytes(Default).

Then I ran the startup repair from the USB drive but failed. The error was slightly different.

    PROBLEM SIGNATURE
    Problem Event Name StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03 unknown
    Problem Signature 04 -1
    Problem Signature 05 ExternalMedia
    Problem Signature 06 1
    Problem Signature 07 NoOsInstalled
    OS Version 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

What else could I try to fix it?
I still want to fix if possible.

If not, what is the best way to backup all program data/settings and files from the laptop in this case? Thank you.

I am not sure that a startup repair from a bootable win7 usb drive is the same as from a win7 install media ????

sounds like it might be mbr boot manager type problems. Above link has fixes for that

But if registry is corrupt then maybe this
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...-recovery.html

you can also try a repair install which should keep your programs/files etc, but will probably need driver updates afterwards.

In this tutorial, it states in step 13:

The DEFAULT, SAM and SECURITY files should each be about 262,000 bytes in size.
The SOFTWARE file should be about 26,000,000 bytes.
The SYSTEM file should be about 9,900,000 bytes.
The file sizes presented here are approximate estimations, and may vary depending on your system...

The sizes of the laptop's are largely different. They are:
    DEFAULT 1,867,776
    SAM 28,672
    SECURITY 36,864
    SOFTWARE 116,654,080
    SYSTEM 27,770,880

    Should I still proceed?

    C drive is system reserved.
D drive is actually where Windows installed.
The laptop is 5-6 years old. It should be legacy install. That's why I formatted the USB drive as MBR / BIOS or UEFI-CSM.

    1. F8 doesn't work. I couldn't even boot.

    2. Previously I ran chkdsk from the startup repair (not from the USB drive) through command prompt. It was successful. No bad sector was found in the Windows partition (Drive D).
I ran chkdsk via command prompt from the USB drive to check Drive C too. It was successful. No bad sector was found.

    3. When I ran the system recovery option from the USB drive, the system did not list any operating system or drive in the list. Clearly Windows partition is at Drive D, but for some reasons it failed to detect.

This is what is normally shown, but the list is empty in my case.

    4. I tried to run the following command in the USB drive.

I switched to drive C. Then type:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot

I tried to reboot. The following message showed up this time (instead of going straight to startup repair).

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...
    ...
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

    5. I tried this combination too.
    Bootrec /Fixboot
    Bootrec /Fixmbr
    Bootsect /nt60 all /MBR

Rebooted. The same error message appeared as shown above.

I don't think attempting to fix the registry will do anything if you can't see a windows partition.

Can you run disk manager from the usb to see how that drive d shows up ? Is the boot partition active?

    I typed:
    D:
    DIR

    Windows folder is there.

Then I typed diskmgmt but it didn't work. No such command.

    I typed:
    diskpart
    list volume

Both drive C and D (volume 1 and 2) were shown. Then I typed:
    select volume 1
    active
    select volume 2
    active

Rebooted. The same error message occurred. (An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data)

Is this an oem win7 install ? like a dell that may have some kind of special recovery stuff ?
Bootrec /Scanos should find all os's.
Did you have dual boot at any time ?
Running out of ideas, but there are numerous sites on how to fix the File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc000000f error, with different methods.

    https://www.think-like-a-computer.co...00f-windows-7/

Curious how windows is on d and c is system .reserved....or maybe thats just how your rufus reads it.

little rusty on win7, it's been a long time since i ran it.

I am also not sure of 2 active partitions....usually the active partition is system reserved partition but could also be the os partition.Depends on where the boot files are.
    Having 2 active I believe is a problem ????

    I tried bcdboot D:\Windows
It complained "failure when attempting to copy boot files"

I have no idea why windows is on d and c is system reserved.
I changed the drive letters. Assigning Windows drive to C, system reserved to D.
Then I ran bcdboot C:\Windows. The same error occurred.

It is an OEM Windows 7. I don't have any disc so no special recovery stuff available. The warranty is expired long time ago.

It is not dual boot. Only Windows 7 is installed on the only single drive in the laptop.

    Bootrec /Scanos
Returned: total identified windows installations 0

I tested it and it seems if I mark the latter active, the former will become inactive.

    I tried:
    diskpart
    select volume 1
    active

Then ran system repair but failed. The same error message:

    PROBLEM SIGNATURE
    Problem Event Name StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02 6.1.7600.16385

I marked the Windows partition as active instead and ran system repair but failed. The same error message was shown as above.

I guess the cause of the issue is it failed to detect the existence of the Windows system at all. Perhaps the boot data is seriously damaged? That's why so many commands failed to work, or couldn't be executed at all.

How come a re-installation of Comodo Internet Security could cause such a damage? *Headache*

usb drive should not be in a usb 3 port. Some say this gives failure to copy boot drivers.
