    Video Card

    Hi

If you only want to play games, geat a GForce 2.. GForce3, no-one is using the goodies on that card.

If you do other things, like modeling/rendering, video, and 2D work (Fantastic 2D display, everything except for 3D games is 2D: Get a ATI Radeon 64DDR VIVO. (VIVO=Video Out and Video IN) The Radeon is great for capturing Video and editing, movie making, high density crystal clear display.

The nVidia cards are only good for games, anything else, they are not that good.

I don't own the Nvidia cards but can give you my opinion of the Radeon. I bought a Radeon (SE) 64 VIVO two weeks ago and am very impressed. Then again I came up from a Voodoo3 PCI. In 3DMark 2000 I hit 5510 no overclock (198/198). 3DMark 2001 I hit 3168 no overclock. The image quality is outstanding. I am playing MW4 and it looks great on max settings while still being playable (no FSAA). I just finished Max Payne, took a few more hours than it would have, if I wasn't just walking around looking at all the eye candy. Macabre eye candy but eye candy none the less. One thing I really love about this card is the DVD playback. I run my DVD's to my TV and it is a noticeable difference compared to my old software player. If you are into overclocking, I have been able to get the card up to 230/230 (increased to 3512) with no noticeable artifacts in 3DMark 2001. I honestly haven't tried the Video capture features yet. I have heard they can be problematic, but that they work. I have had no problems at all with the card and am using the standard drivers Version 7075. I will be looking to upgrade again after Christmas and the price was right for me - $165, well worth it. There is my 2 cents.

For the people that say waste 200 bucks to buy a GF2 Ultra ... I say - why bother?

For a little extra get the GF3 ... after a little online searching - mainly through the hot deal forums at various tech sites, I got my Elsa 920 with one such online coupon. Price = 299 + 11 overnight S/H.

Only slightly more than a brand new GF2 Ultra.

And as to no games supporting GF3 ... err ... Max Payne.

Considering MaxPayne is a first gen GF3 / DX8 game, it can only improve from there. Don't sink money into a GF2 Ultra ... unless you can get it at a DEEEEEEP discount. It doesn't offer any benefits over other GF2 cards except faster ram & higher stock clock rates.

    For gaming - hands down - GF3
For photo quality: Either Radeon All in Wonder (kinda pricey) or Matrox Millenium G450 (only 120 or so).

    Good luck,

    - TM

    Thumbs up

For what you are wanting, the Radeon VIVO or AIW is the only card that fits your situation. The GF3 is almost double what you are budeted to spend. The VIVO 64mg Radeon can be purchased for less than $200.00 and this vid card cannot be beat period for the money. The Radeon 2 will be available probably by the end of the year. This card is in full production at a China mfg plant right now. This vid card will surpass the GF3 in some areas.

Just remember the Radeon 2 and the GF3 has features that very few gaming companies are writiing code to utilize these features.

My recommendation is the Radeon VIVO 64mg DDR. Great fps, screen clairity is outstanding.

I would keep the Voodoo 5500 for now. With 4x FSAA the image quality is sweet. The new Radeon comes out in September and I would take the jump then.
