EQ is by far what i would consider a rpg. When I think about PC RPGs, im expecting a skill system where you dont max it 10 minutes after you lvl. A game where people are there are good gm events, that actually has a meaning to it. And of course, quests that do not involve camping some uber mob that spawns once a month and requires a uber guild to take down (doesnt bother me much.. since im in one of those uber guilds, but other people ("casual gamers") who dont have the tiem to play 10 hours a week (like me) miss out on a lot of cool things). I admit that some quests are fun, but mostly all those quests belong to the people over lvl 55 and in guilds able to take down a 250k+ hp mob who quads for 500 damage. Then last, something to do rather than "Kill this for exp, kill it again for more, kill it untill you get lvl 60". Again, most people are not lucky enough to have a guild pw your 3rd twink on your second account to lvl 50+ in 2 weeks to participate in raids. For some people, lvling to 30 can take at least a year.
Also once you get high lvl and is in a guild capable of killing uber mobs, there isnt much to do anymore. Esp if your lvl 60. The only things you can do are raid ToV (or Kael) every night for more armor that you dont need. Or attempt to kill another mob that nobody has killed before.
I have a level 52 bard on veshan ill sell also has a level 26 cleric and level 22 enc with skill of 250 on jewelry

well my answer is most definitely Yes, EQ has set a standard. I hear all these complaints about the camping of mobs, "nothing to do" at higher levels, unless you are in a uber-guild... but look, Everquest is a truly great game. Fact is that half the game is socializing with friends in the game, and I would be willing to guess that about 90% of Everquest players, the FIRST thing they do when logging on a character is do a '/who all friend', or whatever command it is to start seeking out friends in the game.
Everquest is what YOU make it. If it is boring to you to camp a mob over and over again, then you are the bored Cleric or Rogue, or whatever you are. If you are having a great time, however, maybe taking a swig of brandy between long fights, then you are the drunkard Warrior, Bard, whatever. That is role playing my friends =)
Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I would love to try EQ but I don't want to spend 50 bucks on a game that makes me pay $10 a month to play. Why don't game companies who make these massive multiplayer games switch to a purely subscription based pricing? If you pay every month why should you have to pay for the game in the first place, pay for updates, etc?
obviously, nobody wants to pay to play. It is too bad these producers of online games charge the monthly fee- BUT fact is this: people love Everquest and they WILL pay for it, and Verant knows it. So they charge.
Also, consider how much time people are spending with Everquest. We're talking an average 15-20 hours a week or so. If you round that to 17.5 hrs a week for the average player, we are talking 76 hours a month. So ultimately you are paying to be on one of their servers (from over 40 to choose from) for a rate of average 7.6 hours per dollar spent. And that is the average player. If you really get into it, you can very easily spend 40+ hours a week on there.
I'll say this though- I do not like to make the case for paying to play. But with Everquest, it becomes a question of "Do I hold up my values that say Pay-To-Play is wrong?" or do I say "Forget values, Everquest rocks, lemme play the damn game!"

I don't mind the monthly fee that much since they have to pay for servers and moderators and the like. I wish they would make up their minds though. Pay for the game up front or pay for play. Removing the barriers to start playing the game would make them some money since they would have people hooked. I won't pay 50 bucks to buy the game and ten bucks for a subscription just so I can see if I like the game.
OK, its an old post, but just had to comment. Ive been playing EQ since about a month after it came out. Now that Dark Age of Camelot is coming out in 7 days its time to quit.
EQ definately set a standard, but there are problems with the game (as any game will have). Camping is one of them. It get repetitive. I havent wanted to play the game for the last month, even though Im not in Beta DAoC.
The main problem I have with EQ is the customer support. If something happens to you character they dont care. If all your items vanish. It was your fault. If your character wont load into the game, they tell you to start over. They feel no responsiblity to the customer base. Even worse is the attitude the present. Players state various game errors or bugs and for months the players are told that there is nothing wrong. Verant out right lies to the player base on some issues, and that I find totally unacceptable.
Anyways.... It doesnt matter bc there is a new game coming out and from all the reviews it eliminates many of the flaws that EQ has, so im in.

Malleable yeah you make good points. I've never had a big problem personally with the in-game managers so probably I am overlooking that. For a pay-to-play game though, you should definitely be treated well, and I've heard both good and bad stories about customer service. So I take that for what it is worth.
I will say this: the other day my character zoned into Stonebrunt Mountains, a newer zone. Well I had not run the patch yet to get the zone on my PC and of course I crashed when I zoned in. So I run the patch, log on my character, and guess what? My character is sitting wayyy down at the bottom of the zone- I mean, we are talking I can look up and see the ground and trees above me. Everything around me is grey, except for what I can make out of the actual zone far above. So I petition. GM answers in about 15 minutes. He says "how may I help you?" I answer by telling him what happened to me and I'm stuck. His reply "Just a sec".
Next thing I know, he drops me off in the middle of the zone and gates out without another word spoken. My character is level 30, and I do not know this zone at ALL. I could have easily died if I had run the wrong direction (this character is a heavily encumbered Paladin)- luckily I just started following a wall and eventually found the zone back out. But still, man if I had died I would have been so pissed off! what should have happened is the guy should have asked me where do I want to be dropped off, and check that my character would be safe. You don't just drop a player off in the middle of a zone and gate out without a word.
All complaining aside, the game itself still rocks. I think alot of your EQ experience has alot to do with the guild you are in too, but thats another topic.
As for DaoC, yeah I'll definitely check that one out, but I did give AO a try, and I'm right back on it with Everquest again. /shrug

oh hey Afalzone, there is an 'original' edition of Everquest now in stores. Price is 10 bucks. Of course, yes, if you do get into it, there will be another $30 I think it is for the Ruins of Kunark expansion, and another $20 for the Velious expansion.
But, as you say, to just "give it a try" the cost on that would be $9.95 now.

good game ! two thumbs up! 4 stars **** !
you know what Everquest is old-school now, the graphics are way out-dated, the server economies suck now (at least on my server Prexus), uber guild politics suck, camping spots can get tiring,
BUT
EVERQUEST STILL ROCKS!!! I'm sorry, but there is still nothing like pulling a team together and leading them through the Mines of Nurga, or even something low-level like Najena. Get's your blood flowing, and most every character has a crucial role to play in groups (complain all you want, it is still true). Obviously the cleric has the responsibility of watching the health of the group. The enchanter has the enormous responsibility sometimes of keeping the mezmerization up. The druid, snaring, how important is that? You let one get away to bring friends back, and you all die. The tanks, must be aware of where the mobs are if they need to turn and start taunting.
I dunno but I've tried Tribes2 and I've tried CS, and yeah those games rock. I've also tried Anarchy Online, and while it's good, there just seems to be something missing (so far). With Everquest though, man *the* killer rush is fighting somewhere like, say Mistmoore, you've got crazy mobs all ganging up on your group. Then you hear the words:
"a negotiator begins to cast a spell"
and everyone is like OH SHHH..... know what I'm saying? And my characters have not even seen the Planes yet. One day I'll see Veeshan's Peak too.
