Always stikes me as kind of funny you spend as much or more cooling your houses in the summer than we do heating ours in the winter

Well cause of the climate, Bills in the winter here can be almost as high, If not higher, Than they are in the summer, Although the desert here may be the exception to that rule. Besides It gets to 115F here in the summer and there is no shade outside, Unless You grow It Yourself of course.

    Mornin'!

Y'know, in some areas of high desert there, it costs as much to heat in the winter as it does to cool in the summer. Wild.

    Morning!

Grrr....the furnace has been turning on plenty this morning! Sure it's 3 degrees below freezing, but it was yesterday morning too! I'm racking my brain trying to figure out some reason why I'm not seeing a decrease in the amount of heat being used. I've gone from R6 to R35 in the attic - how can that not make a large impact on the length of time the furnace spends on?

Dang Ned you beat me to it! That leaves...the doors! Gotta close the dang doors!

How old is the house Hubris? Might need some better insulation in the walls, check for drafts around the windows, etc. Some old windows aren't very good at insulation either. Had a friend with a newer house that was 'drafty', we ended up pulling all the trim around the windows and doors and using spray foam insulation to seal things up.

And don't forget servicing the furnace. Sometimes they get too dirty to operate efficiently. Got any chimney flues left open?

    Re: The Seti Bar

The house is 40 years old. Previous owners replaced all the upstairs windows with good ones, double-pane with gas in between. I've redone the weatherstripping around the doors, they don't seem to have any drafts. Previous owners also put styrofoam outside before they put on the vinyl siding. The walls may not be quite as efficient as a brand new house, but they should be adequate. The house is sealed fairly well...when you open or close any door (inside or outside) quickly you can feel the air pressure change, so there must not be too many gaps.

Downstairs windows will get replaced next year. I have heat-shrink film to put over them for this winter.

Hopefully it was just the fact that my thermostat drops the house to 16C at night, and it was rising to 19C when we got up....not that there is actually a problem somewhere. The furnace is 15 years old....not highly efficient, and I don't know if it's ever been cleaned - although it was inspected when we bought the place, and he didn't say anything about it being particularly dirty.

I had owned a house once and had the house tested to see If there were any leaks, I believe It was a pressure test, Then They caulked the leaks and retested the house to compare the results, It helped. Old houses tend to have lots of cracks around here, But when You live in California, You have to learn to live with Earthquakes, But most houses around here today are designed to handle most of them without any real worry. Hmm 60.5F(16C), Well here It was 66F(19C) last night, Now It's 76F inside and yeah It'll get warmer possibly, Although It's supposed to be partly cloudy and no warmer outside than 73F today. Oh well have fun Hubris.
