Athlon Xp Retail Heatsink Help...

Hi... i am receiving my new athlon xp 1900 with the asus A7V266-E tomorrow.. and i bought it with the retail heatsink.. now i know that isnt a good heatsink at all.. but.. I wont have the money for another few weeks to buy a real good heatsink ( i wanna get the alpha 8045.. that sound good to you all? or whats better?) My question is.. would the retail heatsink and fan do ok for a few weeks? I mean.. isn't it made to be ok on it? And another quick question is besides a noisy delta.. what kind of 80mm fan would be good for the ALpha PAL8045 when i do get it? If the fan is powerfull need a molex adapter and a 3 pin for the mobo monitoring.. thanks alot! later..

I've not seen the heat sink that ships with the XP1900+, but have heard that it's much improved over the ones that came with the TBirds and XP1800+ on down. As long as you aren't (apologies to those that are and frequent here) anal retentive about having ultra low temperatures, the retail hsf should do OK. Unless you plan to overclock, that hsf will do for the life of the chip. You may also pick up a °C or two by using Arctic Silver II or similar in lieu of the thermal interface included with the retail heat sink.

If you wish to go with a better one, the Alpha8045 is a good choice. You have verified its compatibility with that board, I assume. It's had problems with a few due to capacitors in the way.

As for 80mm fans (all fans), noise and flow pretty well go together. Again, for sufficient cooling, something like the H-series Panaflo or 36CFM Sanyo Denki would do nicely. Both offer among the best ratio of flow/noise with the Sanyo Denki holding the edge slightly.

Yea.. I have thought about compatablilty with the alpha pal8045 and my board.. if its the new version it will fit.. if not i will just use a dremel and shave off a little where the transistor is. I was wondering what temp should my proc run at? At what temp should i be alarmed? .. thanks..

I'd ask/search around the ASUS forum for others with that mobo and XP processors to get a feel for expected temperatures. If it's anything like the A7M, watch out for unannounced recalibrations to occur with a BIOS revision. Lots of people alarmed that their temperatures had suddenly climbed 10°C with a new BIOS. Of course the REAL temperature didn't change, but the BIOS reported a much higher one.

Thats why i posted it up here.. maybe someone with a similar mobo can help! is the retail heatsink gunna work for a while?!? and what are good cool temps and max temps?

The Sanyo D also do a 53cfm unit thats going to go on my 8045 after xmas when i pick it up from my ma's house up north, but the SK6 with a Delta/TT 31cfm seems to do well if ur not planning on OC'ing to much.

the retail heatsink is keeping my athlon xp 1900 at 52-55C at all times.. not tooo bad.. right?

GANGSTA U'LL HAVE TO SHOUT COS MY DELTA'S TO LOUD!!!!

The delta is fine if ur in a noisy place or doing noisy things on the pc (Unreal, Kingpin or AvP) but for normal times it can be a pain and I need to play with some normal things next year (2k server and client stuff) I need to reduce the noise a tad. The SK6 will be used next year with another one and some TT31cfm's on a pair of Duron MP's when a decent dual board comes out. But till I get my hands on my 8045 ITS BACK TO THE NOISE FARM!!!!!!!!
