Mayby I am confusing 4 ide plugins on the card for the 2 channels. To me if it has 4 spots to plug in a ide cable you should be able to put 8 drives on it i thought....4 on master 4 on slave??? or does it not work that way... This is my first foray into the world of adaptor cards so bear with me.[i always used onboard before this.]

Did you see the pic?It has 4 ide plugins.... so only one drive can go on each ide plugin then?

Another window opens up with the card picture and the details on the card.It is down at the bottem of the list not the top card that is the 75$ultra tx2 . The tx2000 ultra is at the bottem and is 145$

thats where i am looking. it is only 2 ide channels. there is a small space in the middle of each of the 2 connectors for the tab on the ide cable connectors to fit into.

not sure about the ram part. can only guess that it would relieve the possible stress and resources it would normally pull from the system.

the 4 ide channels will allow for 8 drives and if you are only running four drives, each can have its own seperate channel

im sure there is more to it then that, but i dont know what they are. still researching the card as it is new to me.

The RAM on the adaptor acts in the same way the RAM on your video card acts. Separate from the main system RAM/CPU for its own control. Faster controller action without worrying the CPU and detracting from what it's trying to do.

A controller can only act on one (1) device at a time, no matter how many devices may be on its bus. One HDD on a controler has the controllers undivided attention where as the same controller with two (2) HDDs has to divide its efforts, hence higher latency.
