Exactly. And that is what AMD and inhell have been recommending in their own published documentation for many years now. In its simplest form:

One more on the top and an opening the front bottom that is large enough to allow an inflow in CFM equal to the combined outflow of the exaust fans is the ideal. Many of the most popular cases do not meet this criteria.

We 'll have to do with ATX instead ... ( With lowered power consumption [CPU] and a well cooled box, that shouldn't be a problem )

    Hello BWM,

Nice drawing and yes that is the way I set up my cases. The question is the opening in the front of the case. I may have to open up more space.

Good idea about feeling output with case open and then shutting it to see if output drops.

Great way to tell about decreased flow.

So obvious once you know it isn't it ??

Howdy! Yeah, it seems obvious now, but I went through the same "more fans is better" stage as most enthusiasts do or have. There are even proponents of positive pressure inside the case, which real life has taught me is rediculous as well as noisy LOL. AMD published their first set of recommendations back in the socket-7 days and the industry has not changed it since because it just makes good sense. Proper airflow path with equal intake and outflow area and a fan matching that airflow capability is the right way to do it, and other than the PSU fan, it only takes one more to do it right in a properly designed case.

Re: The Folded Frog Pub and Eats!!!!

yes sir, gone are my days of the hoover vacumn syndrome

on my latest build i very carefully tucked away as much of the wiring as possible, using very low speed fans and the cpu tunnel on the side of the case lid the cpu temp and ambient case temp actually stays 3 to 4 degrees cooler with the lid intact then leaving the lid off and disconnecting the fans. And Im only using the stock cooler, whats surprising is that its uber quiet, this is my htpc after all and I bought the quiet fans billed for this type of application but I was afraid the AMD stock HSF would be a noisy mofo like the Inhell ones, boy was I wrong. Its quiet itself and Im actually having a hard time adjusting to the fact that its running sometimes.

In my hey days that reassuring sound of all those 6k rpm fans was reassuring all was well, but Im adjusting to it. Even the Barracuda HDD is pretty quiet so its really unsettling to me at times just how quiet it is, however it is sort of nice too. It is the HTPC and who wants to hear all that fan whirring during a DVD

Im just glad the stock HSF is quiet and is capable of avoidng thermal meltdown, now im only running that cpu at stock because the matx mobo has squat for ocing ability, but being an htpc its supposed to be silent and stable, its not supposed to be an enthusiats ocing mofo LOL it does fold however so its more than just a theater in a box

My other HSF is a Thermalright SI97A and I have panaflos strongest 92mm up top, its a bit noisy but the two together make for a great aircooler, I have been considering getting one of the lower speed Panaflos though, that silence on the other now is kind of refreshing

And luckily these CPUs are only getting more energy efficient these days, AMD has those so called EE SFF edition cpus now and thats what I really want to drop in my HTPC box

Been there too BWM, if I'd put another couple of 120mm fans in my old box that cooled an overclocked Athlon 1300 it would've been a hovercraft,
I still prefer the "slightly" pressurised case though, a mid speed 120mm intake fan with a filter mesh, and the standard Psu and 80 or 120mm low speed exhaust, setup my boxes by removing a floppy drive bay cover and hanging a tissue in front of it, with just enough air escaping to move the tissue slightly outward, the only air entering the case has to go through the front fan/filter, keeps everything inside dust free and keeps dust and cat ( ) hairs out of floppy/optical drives.

That's basically what I'm doing with these terrible/cheap BCC cases I have for three of me rigs. I leave the lower 5 inch drive bay cover off and cover it with filter element material, and a 120 mm Vantec on the back for exaust ensures pretty decent airflow. One 80mm fan in front of the hd does a good job for me raptors.

you said cheap broadway computer corp cases i have used a few of those in the past, too cheap for my tastes, and a few scars to remind me of it, them are full of sharp metal in there
