Rats, two PC's down and no time to fix them.

The WHS server required a software "repair" of the system drive (NTFS) and somehow now will not boot Its stuck in restarts, I'm assuming the MBR or other files are corrupted. CHKDSK says C: is OK but I know better, guess I need a better utility.

My own PC quit overnight and now seems to be failing POST, just a continuous cycle of fan starts and stops, I cleared the BIOS but no go so I have to start pulling it apart and replacing components until I get signs of life.

Nope its a Mcafee update that caused your problem. The entire nation has bee effected by it. The update took a file in windows thinking it was a virus. CK out the news.

    .

If you suspect a bad MBR, you can do a 'fixmbr' from the Windows CD via the recovery route ...
( it also has the 'fixboot' command available ) ...

For the failing PC; always best to start at the base, being the PSU voltage rails measurement ...
A PC (or any other electronic appliance) is only as good as its power supply (one of the first rules we learned in school)

I just thought I would show you what I read today. Apparently The hospitals and other services in Rhoade Island have not been accepting patients because of a similar reboot issue caused by Mc Afee.
I lost a motherboard recently due to a bios failure. Supposedly the new chip is in the mail.

My brother-in-law just told me (email) that they had lots of problems with it at his employer's today too.
He hasn't any because he himself only works on Unix and Linux ...

Now the weekend is here perhaps I shall find time to look for the problems.

    Server is the priority.

Don't think its MBR since the windows screen flash comes up before rebooting, most likely a corrupted file that CHDSK "fixed" or marked bad and its corrupted the file. Sounds like I have to read up on WHS recovery, its XP based but the differences tend to be important.

    My PC

Power supply was my first thought, I hope not its a Corsair modular and no spare at present, think I'll change out the GPU first, -- sigh.

Can't you make some (basic) Voltage measurements on the PSU voltage rails ? Those would give you a certain assurance when they are OK ...

Own PC is breathing again - minus 1 bad stick of Ballistix memory which now awaiting RMA.

Server has a bad HD and will cause lots of problems to get WHS to restore. New 1.5TB ordered $70 if the MIR works maybe I need to get my neighbor to order me one as well ....

Well all boxes were up and running only for the great kitchen MOD project to start. This also involves refinishing the wood floors almost throughout the house so all but two boxes are down and dust is getting everywhere.

Demolition has been completed, just a major spackling job after changing AC ducts and lighting /power electrical and then rebuild will start hopefully Friday.

My hands are sore and a little cut .. but its been an interesting project.

You understand the use of interesting
